Getting to know Souf with souf by DuncanBoxie
Souf is well know for his winning Afrolution design.
His style is automatically recognizable and theres no doubts that this forward thinking designer is going places.
Duncs: So tell me about where you grew up, have you lived there all your life or have you bounced around a lot?
Robert: Well, I was born, buttered and bred in the mother city, cape town. Grew up on the Cape Flats where violence is like part of life and art is your only way out. Well, for me it was. I still stay in the ghettos. It just motivates me to do better in life.
Duncs: When you were a child what did you want to grow up to be and what would you say is your dream job now?
Robert: I always wanted to be a doctor. Strange hey, I know. My grandmother was a nurse so I guess I wanted to follow in her footsteps but as I got older I decided that my passion lies with the arts and went to go study Graphic Design at CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology which was called Cape Tech back then).
I’m currently working for Achievement Awards Group in Cape Town as a designer. We tackle all sorts of projects so I’m cool. I get to design and enter some of my work into competition such as springleap.com. Designing is what I love.
Duncs: Have you got a big family, how many?
Robert: Nope. I got two other siblings and my folks are still alive.
Duncs: What is without doubt the best experience of your life?
Robert: Well…..ummmmm. That’s a tough one. I guess getting this mail from you. LOL. Na, just kidding. I recently bought me a scooter, you know with petrol increases and all, and riding it is just such a pleasure that I’ve decided to get me 400cc bike next. I just love it man.
Duncs: If you could have any super power what would it be?
Robert: The power to illustrate anything I want and it would just come alive. Wouldn’t that be fun. I’ll have a pimped out car, my own little army with super powers. I would definitely make the world a better place to live in. Especially our country. With all the sh1t going on, it’s just madness man.
Duncs: If you could hang out with any star for a day who would it be?
Robert: One star? It would definitely be Madiba. I would really like to know what kind of person he is and what he went through to make this a free country for all. I just feel that it’s better to hear it from the man who went through it all than to watch it on TV and stuff.
Duncs: Who would you consider to be the greatest influence on your actions?
Robert: My cousin. He was shot 11 times and he’s still alive. Thank GOD for that. He’s paralyzed but still kicking it. Just seeing him makes me think that there’s something better out there for me, you know. Keeping it real and sh1t. That’s why I express myself through art. My mother is also a great influence. Just to see what she went through to give us a great education. Man, I love that woman.
Duncs: Describe your artistic style in one word.
Robert: Frootilious!!! LOL. I don’t really stick to one style, always like to explore different styles/techniques. But I must say, I really really dig simplistic designs. There’s just so much you can say about it.
Duncs: What music are you listening to at the moment?
Robert: Hip Hop/Rap. I’m a big Hip Hop/Rap fan. Like the way these artist express themselves through their music. At the moment I’m listening to Skwata Kamp. I mean, man, this crew is da sh1t. Their lyrics is tight. I’m also a big Eminem fan. There’s this unique style about him that I just dig, can’t explain it but I just love the man.
Duncs: If you could get away with any one crime what would it be?
Robert: To steal a car worth R1 million off the show room without anyone noticing. Don’t know how you would do that, but it would sure be funny. The salesman just went for a leak and came back to see his R1 million car is gone. The look on his face, that would be priceless.
