Grant Shepley (aka Gamma Ray)

Grant Shepley - a Springleaping phenomenon!

With a heap of designs entered into more Springleap contests than even we can count, Grant Shepley is one of the most prolific designers we’ve ever had. Consistently dropping amazing artwork which is crafted to a tee and generates massive interest in contest and from fans, it’s no surprise his work is amongst the most recognised of all the designs we feature here on The Leap. But wait! That’s not all - he was also interviewed on TV for coming second in our recent Girls & Football SA design challenge, and as a past winner in multiple contests, we’re looking forward to seeing his submissions in our Battle of The Best design challenge! Today we put the Spotlight On the man, the legend, the maestro and the meticulous artist known as CHUCKY. (and now known as Gamma Ray)   Did you study to become an artist?

I’ve always enjoyed sketching, and even though I originally wanted to study architecture (I sadly did not have the marks for it), my creativity and love for design found an outlet that was more me: graphic design. I did a one year graphic design course at Damelin and then from there taught myself most aspects of design.
What’s your preferred medium, and why?
My style varies a lot. However, a large number of my designs are parody designs. I also find that themed competitions for business-related designs are a strong point of mine. Regarding execution I sometimes just create them digitally on PC, while others are hand drawn; some are a combination of both.

What other designers or illustrators have influenced your work?
I was more influenced by general phases and ideas in the design world from posters, tee designs, logos etc. But my favourite designer is probably the british designer Aled Lewis aka Fatheed. I love how he keeps reinventing his style with every design. His concepts are straight to the point and perfectly executed.
If possible, name your favourite artwork of all time. (If not, name a few!) Love ‘Dead Pixels’ by Aled Lewis. And ‘We’ve got some work to do’ by Travis Pitts is parody design at its best.

What music do you listen to when creating your artwork? I generally listen to a wide range of alternative music. But when designing it is normally on the more acoustic, softer side as I need the music to be in the background so I can focus. Artists like Radiohead, M83, Fleet Foxes, The Velvet Underground, and The Doors to name but a few.   So there you have it folks - insights, delights and highlights from the man who’s brought us some of the most outstanding designs we’ve had the pleasure of featuring here at Springleap. Rest assured, with such a prolific output, there’ll be more to see from this designer’s corner! UPDATE: The Artist Previously Known As ‘CHUCKY’ is CHUCKY no more! It’s true - Grant Shepley has changed his design moniker to Gamma-Ray! Like his page here. If you enjoyed this, take a look at the artists interviewed in our Spotlight On series over here.
