Rick Calzi Interview

Rick Calzi Interview

Rick Calzi interview

Here’s a talented designer who lives in St Petersburg, Florida in the US of A. It’s none other than the horrifically-talented Rick Calzi, whose work on posters is in a class of its own. With linework that’s as crisp and sure as a hundred dollar bill, and with more than a little touch of the dark side of illustration that we here at Springleap love, it’s a pleasure to introduce Rick to those of you who haven’t yet had the pleasure of checking his work out. Ladies and gents, designers and design lovers, put your hands together for Mr Rick Calzi!   Rick Calzi Interview (image courtesy Rick Calzi) SL: Did you study to become an artist?

RC: Yes, I studied at Binghamton University in mid-state New York. I majored in Graphic Design but took more Fine Art classes as they were required for the major. I was really into painting in college, but don’t paint at all anymore.

SL: What’s your preferred medium, and why?

RC: Right now I prefer pencil and paper, then to Illustrator to turn drawings into vector illustrations. Rick Calzi Interview (image courtesy Rick Calzi)

SL: What other designers or illustrators have influenced your work, and why?
RC: Pale Horse is right down the street from me and I have just fallen in love with their style. I always loved drawing with hard black areas and they do a really good job with that.SL: Name some of your favourite artworks of all time.
RC: I don’t have specific artworks that are my favorite more certain styles of artists. My two favorite artists are Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. I found out about these two artists when I was real young so some of their pieces are my favorite of all time. Rick Calzi Interview

SL: What music do you listen to when creating your artwork?
RC: Currently I have been on a huge Bright Eyes binge. Other than that I listen to a lot of My Morning Jacket and Wilco.
