Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the playground!

I’m sure most of you would have heard about the tragic killing of a school boy yesterday when a masked matric student dressed in a ninja suit and wielding a katana went on a rampage.

This kind of attack isn’t exactly a new thing, it happens all over the world and in a country like ours where weapons are easily accessible the possibility of something going wrong is pretty damn high.
This time the students of Nic Diederichs Technical High School were the ones to be exposed to this kind of tragedy.
The matric student apparently slashed a boy that died across the throat with his samurai sword and then went berserk, stabbing another student and injuring two gardeners.
Honestly it’s a “miracle” that more people never lost their lives…a sword is a terribly lethal weapon and in the right hands can be devastating…luckily it seems as if the young boy was just a “normal” novice.

So what possessed the boy to go on a killing spree? “Satan made me do it”, was the reply from the twit like shadow warrior.
Come on buddy at least try and give a good reason for taking another person’s life….Satan had nothing to do with this one folks…although I’m sure he doesn’t mind taking the credit.
Supposedly the police were at the boy’s house and found Slipknot music on his computer….GASP gimme a break, like that means anything….I listen to metal and the last thing I want to do is kill somebody.

We hear the same old crap every year, people blame video games and heavy metal for insane suicidal/murderous kiddies.
I’m afraid the problem is far greater that a choice of tunes boys and girls.
So what now, what do u do with an under aged sword wielding psychopath? Lock him up in juvenile, commit him to a loony bin for emotion engineering?
Well all I know is that there is a court hearing for today or tomorrow where he will be tried for murder and attempted murder…should they even bother with assault?
Dude this lightie is up sh*t creek without a paddle, enjoy your life my man….and to think he was almost out of high school, which may well have been half the problem.

In the past few years school violence has been on the increase in South Africa and there seems to be no stopping it.
Inn the very same high school there is talk of one of the teachers that disciplines the students with a taser….I frigging taser dude, they are kids not cattle.
Another from the school filed an assault charge against another student for choking her son when he wanted to get him off a computer…geez didn’t his mother ever tech him to wait his turn.
Something needs to be done in a big way, but who do we turn to for support…government aid group’s maybe? What do they know about these kids…every single one is different and experiencing a different problem….does that then mean that the parents have to step up and take the heat?
In many cases it’s not the parents that are messed up…it’s just that the kid has a serious psychological problem.

Also what stereotype are they going to fit this guy into….the tool arrived in a ninja suit wielding a katana, which is a samurai sword….shall we then call him a “ninurai” or perhaps a “samuinja”….confusing indeed.

Ah you misunderstand my point :)

I am not saying that the child bears any less responsibility. I am saying that this Is something premeditated, and therefore observable.

Parents are not as involved as they should be in their childs lives. They give too much control over.

What was that boy doing with four swords dangerous enough to kill with? Apparently he also dabbled in drugs?
How did his folks miss this? Did they ignore it?

There had to be behavioral cues that would have pointed towards his upcoming outburst, and these would have escalated gradually over time. Surely the parents noticed?!

I think they did, and did not do anything about it.

Which is why I say (and this might just be me being misguided) that the parents are equally to blame. If there was a law that weighed the parents negligence (for want of a better word) and then punished them for it in cases like this, I think we would have far less of these incidents.

Having said that, I do believe that the boy (and the girls in the article i posted) must be tried as adults. And that their sentences must be harsh.

I disagree with you Sabre:
“Cogito, ergo sum” (I think therefore I am).
Murder in whatever form and for whatever reason is generally meditated.
Anyone who have actively decided and committed to do something (ie=murder) should be held responsible for their actions.

Charging parents to pay for the crimes of their children will only open the doors to more potential mass murdering kiddies who might 1: have a grudge against their parents 2: hate everyone and would LOVE the opportunity to cause chaos and destroy a few lives 3: Simply want to see how far they can get.

Teenage disputes like the girls who attacked and killed in your link, and the ninja are generally pre-meditated.
“|like omg I so don’t liker her cause she’s not wearing the right shoes… Like we should just like go away”.

There needs to be a more harsh form of punishment for teenagers, there need to be harsher punishments for crime in this country in general.

I think there should be a law that forces parents to be tried with their kids when the charge against the child is murder / rape / something similar.

it really pisses me off when music or video games get blamed for something like this.
what would they have said if he had Gareth Gates or Bokjol treffers 21 on his computer? nothing…you cant blame music for this
this kid obviously has some serious issues and i know we are not supposed to judge but in this case I will.I ope this boy suffers and pays a huge price for what he did.

also makes you think about these outrageous statements being made by Julius Malema of the ANC Youth League…“we will kill for Zuma!”, what next? a political killing spree for our mashimi wami singing JZ?

Last night I had the weirdest dream I’ve had in ages.
You know when you have one of those crazily vivid dreams where you can feel everything…smell, touch, hearing…everything just seems so real, anyways it was one of those.

I was wandering around what seemed to be a huge office party and the place was packed full of people from all walks of life, quite a few of them being old friends and family members.
When suddenly I noticed something that they all shared in common…every last person was wearing a Springleap design ROFL.

Honestly, talk about taking your work home with you.
I work with Springleap by doing the odd spot of writing and design checking for new submissions…which is awesome just by the way :P
So yeah when I saw a few people wearing designs that hadn’t been approved I was confused and then…really PISSED OFF.
I remember accosting a few people asking where they got them from…I felt as if I’d either been left out the loop on some designs that I hadn’t approved or somebody was ripping off our designs.
Needless to say I was seeing red and ready to administer a smack down LOL.

When I woke up the next morning and realized it was all in my REM world, I actually felt embarrassed.
You know when you wake up after a heavy night of partying where you got a “little” out of hand….yeah I felt like that….shameful guilt :P

I can’t wait to go to sleep tonight, hopefully I will be spirited away to the same party…this time, knowing that there has been no foul play, I reckon it will be one heck of a jol hehe :D
How about you guys?
Ever had a dream that felt so real that you carried those emotions into the next “waking” day?

Hi,

Some noob questions here. If anyone can answer, please do so.

I have uploaded two designs for next months comp.
The one was approved within a day. The other is still pending approval.

How long does it usually take to get designs approved?
Will I be notified and given a reason if a design is not approved so I can make changes or upload a new design?

Eran mailed me the following regarding approvals:

“Thanks for the submission at springleap – the process of approval takes a bit longer these days as we are trying to be more stringent and there are more approval checks in place to keep the quality of design up.”

Guess I’ll work on some more designs to keep me busy :)

Heya Goggl3boy!

Thanks for submitting,firstly.

We are constantly approving designs as quickly as possible. More recently we have instituted quite a few new checks – that coupled with our team being spread pretty thin doing so much right now, means that sometimes a design takes longer to approve.

We are also not in the habit of just rejecting designs so we discuss everything quite in depth first and very often consult with our printers to make sure we are making the best decisions :)

Remember – you can upload up to 5 designs a month. You don’t have to wait for one to be approved before uploading another.

I actually thought I had already responded to this thread…i think i need coffee.

In general the springleap team takes a lil while (a day or so) to approve designs…recently thats been a bit longer but I think its due to some team meeting or convention that they attended…not sure.

When a design is rejected there is always a reason attached.
If you aren’t happy with the reason, you can always email springleap..they tend to get back to you really fast, and are pretty decent about it too.

Is it at all possible that the artist’s name stays hidden until all the voting has finished at the end of the month?

I believe that it would seriously cut down on personal remarks and all banter will be subject related. It will also reduce buddying up and voting for the designer and not the design.

Just throwing it out there, use it, don’t use it

Seeing as we have two sides of this coin, why not give the designer the option to show his/her name and also choose whether or not they want their designs commented on.

You then have a couple of options

1) Just the design, no name, no comments.
2) The design, no name, comments enabled
3) The design, your name, no comments
4) The design, your name, comments enabled.

This should keep everyone happy?

I hear you and if everyone stays civil then it works like a charm.
I joined springleap for the fun factor. It’s fun designing and seeing the voting, but if someone ripping your design to shreds because you mentioned something negative about theirs (worst case senario)then the fun starts decreasing.

And what you said about it being a tough world in the creative working arena. True, but why does springleap have to be the same. I’m sure everyone gets a tough run at work, why do we need to get it here. This place o serene happiness.

I’m just not a big fan of little clicks and online bullying and my suggestion was only to nip that in the bud. things seemed to have calmed down now so maybe it’s not necessary anymore.

I think it is VERY important for people to keep their names on their designs – be proud of your work! Stand by it!

And for people who have ego issues – this is a perfect time to get over it – try a Art/architecture critique sometime – if you think this is a tough crowd….

Hell – try any ad agency – that is one stony faced bunch let me tell you – there are no punches pulled there.

It’s always fun to see the springleapers have a good go at each other – the trick for the artist is to know what and who to listen to.

Water off a duck’s back and all that!

I have really been amazed at how some of the artists at springleap have really learned from all the critique and taken their art to the next level the following month.

And HEY! – let’s be honest : what would springleap be without Tay vs Dusty vs Topgun vs KingC vs everyone else ;)

All big families have their squabbles after all :)

I would have to disagree, cause it could work both ways, someone might comment or give a better score because they know your work or style.

Also how would comment back or say thank you or respond to someones critique? I think its a good idea, but with a tight niched fam like we got here (insert we are the world song now) I wanna know what Sebell is coming out with, cause I easily see someone doing a design using someone style hoping more would vote cause they thought it was someone else…
