Well.. where to start.

I think that copyright infringement is one thing… but when you are using things that are in public domain… for use IN ART (which is what Tshirt design is) should not be an issue.

I’ve had 2 shirts removed because of copyright ‘issues’ Now i ask you…where does this stop? the rules need to be amended to state this clearer. Now im not being a sour poes re this… ill make other submissions.. but before i do i want to be clear. where does this line start?

Can we use fonts that are free online? can we use brushes/vectors that are freely downloadable … because they are NOT our original design?

I think that these should be allowed.. as well as using logo/images etc…if they are done well. By this i mean.. if i wanna make the Mona Lisa riding a bike… i should be allowed to…because i came up with that idea. Its my original idea to do that. The fact is im not claiming i DESIGNED the mona lisa…but i did design this shirt and THAT is the original idea.

What are your thoughts? where is the line? (dont get me wrong.. i love sringleap..is a wicked idea.. my mind is full of random things that i would like to see on shirts and im sure others will also… but i need to know what i can do and what i cant. I also would like to know if i can use vector art that i find online and modify for my use….because if that is the case..i would like my other designs back :P )

I do not want to throw a spanner in the works here, but this whole idealistic approach to “100% original” is not being executed or supported that strongly in the voting or I am guessing the submissions.

Regarding brushes and vectors. If your purchase the vectors and they are royalty free then you are all good. Some free stuff on the net is available for commercial use, but original artist will cleary state the rights usage.

A company that comes to mind is Gomedia, they are well known for their vector art and packs, but once in awhile they give out free vector samples and free brushes, which they state clearly that they are allowed for commercial use.

Fonts on the other hand, ie DAFONT.COM and etc usually don’t allow for commercial use, so basically if your going to make money off of it, you can’t use it, but you can always contact the original artist and see what you can work out. Some fonts are as cheap as $14.99 or $50, just depends on the usage.

Now when it comes to drawing the Mona Lisa on a bike, that falls in the realm of paradoy or inspiration. Most ideas aren’t original, and were inspired from something, so if you draw your own Mona Lisa riding on a bike you drew, then it should be fair game. The idea of taking mona lisa and adding her onto a bike would be copyright infringement..

Wow! What a week!

The Sanlam South African fashion Week was one awesome experience! I would have loved to have kept everyone up to date but due to numerous technical problems I was not able to connect to the web.

Having grown up in the fashion industry it was always a dream of mine to be a part of the South African Fashion Week. Arriving on the first day was quite intimidating, the names, the faces, the attitudes, the egos all had a part to play. However, this soon fell away as my side kick for the week, Eran, made me settle right at home.

Setting up our stand was quite a mission. We pride ourselves on having all our shirts always neatly folded and in pristine condition. This was probably why Eran kept volunteering to go steam the shirts in female models change room! Once we had everything sorted and we were well and truly settled it was business time and boy was it intense. The new range of Springleap tees was catching everyone’s eye. I honestly think between the two of us we must have told at least a Thousand people about Springleap.

Networking was a big part of our trip and some of the contacts that were made will only help Springleap grow in a positive way. From the editors of major newspapers to fashion directors of the biggest men’s magazine in South Africa, everyone was impressed and drawn to the quality product that Springleap offers. I must say, I felt proud representing something so cool and fresh.

Now for some of the more interesting bits…Eran was interviewed by Urban Brew, a local television programme that focuses on the youth in South Africa. Watching the interview take place was quite an experience and I have to say Eran handled it like a pro. You can catch the interview at 9pm on SABC 1 this Wednesday. Now for my 30 seconds of fame! I was asked to appear in a Revlon advert that will be shown locally and abroad. Hopefully it will help me with the ladies out there! We got some really good shots with me in the RGB Springleap shirt. The advert will be on television in two months time.

It was awesome meeting some of you Springleapers out there. Allison, who produced the Cthulu design in our very first competition, was amazing to talk to.

The design talent we have in South Africa is incredible. Kept at it guys, your work rocks! Once again, I have to say that The Sanlam South African Fashion Week was an amazing experience. I have no doubt that one day Springleap will be showing at the biggest week in South African fashion.

In light of recent events I have decided to change the way I do my voting. Usually I do it under the influence of so many external influences that seem to have clung to me over the years. So I have gone back in my head to a time when they werent around. I remember a time when waking up at 7:30am in the morning to watch KTV pwer addition was the best way to start a weekend, when playing Super Contra on Nintendo was the most violence I would ever see. How will this help my voting you may ask? well I am talking about the feeling that it gave me, a feeling that very few things give me now days. Its like being blind and seeing for the first time. I will judge on that basis, does this shirt gimme that goood old feeling…Now I cant jsut go voting like mother teresea on weed, and give everyone 5 (CAUSE LETS BEHONEST MOST OF THE DESIGNS DESERVE IT). No I will also judge on another feeling that I also got recently. I tried to play those old sega games. the excitement was there for about 2min…So my bases for my design winners are:

Does your design give me that sick flick blind colour feeling…and does it last…Gimme a design like that and thats how you will get a 5 from me…

I will also work on my comments, as I realise now that they have been “controversal” in the past. And no this doesnt mean I will be a bob marley meets Ghnadi kinda commentator. I will still be brutaly honest but I will try throw about of constructiveness in with it… So enjoy hte silence that I have given to springleap this month (lots of too much to do on my side), and I will be back with full fury in just a few days…

So let me know what do you guys do when it comes to voting..do you close your eyes before viewing the design so your mind isnt clattered with past designs…let me know what works best for you…So before I end up writing a book its your turn to comments on my comment…and maybe let me know what you did ages ago that gave you that feeling that it doesnt do it for you so much now days. It might be a person, a pet or just a song. But share it and who knows you could start a new voting style…
