Time for something special!
Get ready to break in the festive season with an amazing summer market which will set the tone for the rest of an amazing year-end!
Come and join the Springleap team as we light up the Fringe Handmade Creative Goods Market with the very best of our awesome t-shirts on offer, as well as a few of our very cool hoodies.
The Fringe Handmade Creative Goods Market has been created through the partnership of the most important stakeholders in the area, such as, the Cape Craft and Design Institute and the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC), Woodheads and the Fledge Creative Catalyst for young designers.
This market sets itself apart from other ‘typical’ summer markets by placing a huge emphasis on locally produced, highly original handmade products. If you are looking for mega unique items that you won’t find anywhere else, such as crafts, fashion, decor, jewellery and accessories, this is the place!
This is not your average market with the same ‘yawn worthy’ offerings that you find at any given ‘flea market’, this is a celebration of South African ingenuity, creativity and pure design magic.
The ‘Fringe’ for those of you who don’t know is the area in Cape Town that lies on the outskirts of the major CBD. It has fast become a Mecca for up-and-coming artistic types and is home to forward thinking design institutions such as the CTFC. Springleap is proud to be part of this funk-tastic design zone, which stands in company with some of the finest creatives in South Africa.
The Fringe Handmade: Creative Goods Market
Date - 03 December 2011 (10:00 - 18:00)

Splishy Splash!!!
Congratulations go out to Robsonborges for his stunning first victory on Springleap with his impeccably cool fantasy design entitled, The song of mermaid.
Mermaids are rather mysterious creatures!
In some cultures they are beautiful half maiden half fish beings who save drowning sailors from a date with Davy Jones Locker, in others they are terrible creatures that seduce you with their looks and then drag you beneath the waves to feast on your flesh.
Hmmm, well either way, this design has a powerful allure that cannot be denied.
This amazing design has employed the art of incorporating ‘negative space’ in order to create a more complete piece. It does this by using the tee colour to its full potential, which in this case becomes not only the background colour, but also the main colour for the mermaid and her fishy friends.
To top it all off Robsonborges has created a dazzling gradient effect that silhouettes the mermaid beautifully in its glow and enhances the overall depth of The song of mermaid.
I personally like the fact that he made a secondary row of stalactites to create an added sense of intensity…now that is what I call going the extra mile!
We asked Robson Borges to tell us more about himself, this is what he had to say:
"My name is Robson, I am a graphic designer and an illustrator based in São Paulo, Brazil. I love urban art, rock, t-shirts and the internet, I try to inspire myself in everything I see on the streets and on daily lives of the world's metropolises. I am very shy so I do not like to write about myself so much."
Well, he may not like to write about himself, but his super cool designs speak volumes about his talent and personal nature!
If you would like to see more of Robson Borges amazing designs please cruise across to his personal website….prepare for your jaw to drop to the floor ;)
This has come just in time for Christmas, if ya know what I mean…hint hint Santa!
Robson we cannot wait to see your next submission, we have no doubt that it’s going to be awesome.
WELL DONE!!!

All hail Deadmau5!
Recently I did a posting about the groovy news that tech-trance electro megastar Joel Thomas Zimmerman (AKA: Deadmua5) will be gracing South African with his unique brand of pounding sultry tunes mixed with a visual performance like none other.
Perhaps the most iconic and central themes to Deadmau5’s stage persona is his giant mouse head, which he wears during his performances.
These crazy mouse heads captivate his crowds and in many way served as a vehicle to his fame…much like Daft Punk uses robot head masks to express their own inner personas.
I’m sure you are thinking that there are plenty of musicians and DJ’s that use masks, what makes Deadmau5 so special!
Well for starters I like that Deadmau5 constantly keeps changing his masks. Many ‘masked musicians’ will keep the same mask for a lengthy period of time, but Deadmau5 keep reinventing and keeping his fans, and designers for that matter, on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the next creation.
Deadmau5 owns his mousy persona…simply, he ‘works’ his like few others are able!
His masks are also very well made.
It’s not like Deadmau5 makes his super-cool mask designs at home with cardboard and sticky-tape. He gets professionals to create the perfect mask, but only after careful design consideration and insight from his fans and designers all over the world.
Check out this link for an awesome photo-set of how a Deadmau5 mask is made.
I love the fact that he gets his fans and designers involved when he is creating a new mask. The act of crowdsourcing definitely works in this artists favour.
Check out his most recent competition where he asked for designers to create his new mask…I love the winner…CHEESE HEAD, so clever!
The only drawback to wearing such a mask is the problem of heat. Back in 2010 Deadmau5 collapsed on stage from exhaustion and vomiting….no doubt a huge swelteringly hot mask is not going to help your plight, especially when you consider the crazy schedule of a DJ of his calibre. I suppose this is a fate/consequence that he is now shackled to. This is his persona and I think it will become difficult for him to shake it at this point!
The Deadmau5 masks are simply awesome.
I can’t wait to see which mask he wears when he destroys the Cape Town crowd next month with his audio-mastery. I’m freaking dying of anticipation!

BWAHHAHA!!!
I haven’t laughed so hard at a TV advert for absolutely eons :D
Yesterday I watched the brand new Nando’s ad which takes a brilliantly hilarious stab at third world dictators. BEHOLD.
Nando’s - The Last Dictator
Basically it depicts Robert Mugabe sitting around his dinner table, thinking about all the good times he spent with various other dictators from around the world. This includes a golden AK-47 water pistol toting Ghadaffi and a joyous PW Botha being pushed on a swing in a park.
This plays nicely off the madness that recently ensued around the death of Ghadaffi and how these dictator’s days are numbered!
Nando’s is a yummy fast food chain that started in South Africa, which is renowned for its super witty adverts that are often controversial and mega relevant for the time.
What I love about the Nando’s advertising team is that they are so insanely sharp!
When something of importance happens, whether it’s political, or simply entertainment, Nando’s will strike back with a clever advert literally the next day…if not the same day it happens.
The Nando’s ‘advertising legend’ has grown to such an extent in South Africa that when something big goes down, we are not interested to hear what the President has to say, but rather what Nando’s will say…its usually more truthful LOL.
Haha, Nando’s really does serve as a ‘looking glass’ into South African society and our more closely guarded opinions.
Get ready to see and hear more from the super funny The Last Dictator campaign, it will soon be heard on radio and spread across various publications.
Word on the street is that the radio ads will feature a very well known voice….I wonder who it could be?
What do you guys and girls think of the new ad?
D
PS: Check out this funny advert that came out this week for the ‘Black Tuesday’ freedom of speech palaver. CLASSIC!

Hi there guys and girls,
We are truly blessed on Springleap to have such an astounding and supremely talented group of designers.
Just lately we have received so many amazing submissions and it is becoming more and more difficult to choose a winner.
This is by no means a bad thing!
Not at all, in fact it’s great that we have such an array of design.
We heartily support design resubmissions. If your design does not win the first time around there is no reason why it won’t walk away with a victory in another competition.
We have had many cases where designs that are sent in for ‘branded contests’, which don’t manage to win, are then sent in for our Open Theme contests and fair much better.

Here are four fantastic designs, submitted into past branded contests, which have now made their way into our November 2 - Open Theme.
Voting has just started, so get involved and let these awesome designers know how you like their changes.
ABOVE - Helping hand by Zenstudio & Be Alive! by Dewedhe
BELOW - Super Salvador & Where's my jane by Matsanni

Remember that designs constantly have room to evolve and be improved upon. If your design doesn’t win it is not the end of the world, merely a stepping stone to future glory and a big phat cash prize, hehe!
Here are a few things to consider before you resubmit a design:
1. Read through the comments your received from other members. Some of our members give amazingly insightful feedback. We as artists need to be able to take criticism and apply it to our future work.
2. Ask another designer for technical help. Yep, they may be after the same prize, but you will be surprised at how helpful designers can be when they are helping out a fellow artist.
3. Try not to resubmit the exact same design with no tweaks. This is a tricky one – The best thing to do (after reading through comments) is to check your final score and see how close you were to the top of the pile. This should give you a rough ‘guess-timation’ of how close you came. Some designs require elements to be tweaked/added/removed….others just need to be placed on a different colour t-shirt.
4. Collaborate. This is a slightly different method which few on Springleap have tried. Take your design, team up with another designer and perhaps make a mash-up of your respective work. You will be amazed at what can come from this. Sure you will have to split the winnings, but this could open the doors for future work and a whole new amalgamation of shared knowledge. We all have our separate strengths, combine them and win!
5. Don’t resubmit the very next contest. People don’t want to be bombarded by the same designs back-to-back. Give it at least a 2-3 contest ‘breathing gap’ before resubmitting.
I hope this gives you a bit more insight into creating successful design resubmissions.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
If you have absolutely any questions about resubmitting, or would like some advice on how to tweak your resubmission, please drop me an email: Duncan [at] springleap [dot] com

GET READY TO ROCK!!!!!
When I say Rolling Stone magazine is the most iconic music magazine of all time, I well and truly mean it!
Kurt Cobain, Jagger, Metallica, Timberlake, Pink, Jackson, Adele, Spears….the list goes on to infinity!
These names are but a drop in the ocean of the intense talent that this amazing magazine has brought us since its inception back in 1967. Generating in-depth stories about the people that move our lives is what this magazine does best!
The news on people’s lips at the moment is the exciting announcement that Rolling Stone magazine will have its very first South African issue.
This is the best news I have heard in ages in regards to music in South Africa.

Rolling Stone magazine will feature articles and personal profiles on musicians, artists and other iconic individuals who are making waves in our world. It will also tackle the very latest thought-provoking stories from screen, radio, fashion…indeed the entertainment industry as a whole!
The Rolling Stone South African edition will be put together on South African soil (Cape Town) by 3i Publishing.
Yes it will feature articles on both local and international bands. But on a deeper level, what does this mean for us as South Africans?
Well for me this news is super exciting because it means that SA music will now have a solid connection with leaders in the music industry in the States. This could very well mean more record deals for our local boys. We need all the exposure we can get and being connected to music maestros like Rolling Stone is a BIG step in the right direction. I hope that many of the articles will wind up in the US edition…and all around the world.
The first issue of Rolling Stone magazine went on sale on Wednesday 23 November 2011…that was yesterday, which means they are already available! Wow, so very excited.
News24 has an awesome gallery of some of the most memorable Rolling Stone magazine covers of all time, check em out!
You can also check out their official Facebook page here.
The Rolling Stone South African edition will set you back R34.95.
You can grab a copy at CNA, Look & Listen, Exclusive Books, Musica, Spar (nationwide), Pick ‘n Pay Hyper and various other selected outlets across the country.
This is pretty minimal wallet damage in my opinion…however let’s get a proper look at the thing and put together a proper review.
I have high expectations. Which is probably dangerous, but what the heck let’s take it as it comes, hehe!
The Rolling Stone South African edition is here….GO GET IT!

Here at Springleap we are fans of all forms of design. Whether it be print or digital design, we are always interested in checking out artwork that will inspire us to create even more amazing stuff!
This time around we would like to chat about internationally renowned potter Andrew Walford.
Andrew has exhibited his awe-inspiring artwork on an international stage, including the US, England, Japan and Germany.
Andrew hails from Shongweni in Kwazulu Natal, where he has been creating breathtaking pottery in his secluded studio for going on 40 years. For those of you who have never been to this part of the world let me assure you that it is beautiful beyond belief. I can truly understand why this master potter chose such a spectacular place to create his work, which is essentially ‘from the Earth’. The inspiration that this area stirs in an artist is more powerful than any Muse.
‘Zulu Zen’ is the name that is often cast as a way of describing Andrew Walford’s work. Indeed his mega popular wall tiles are an amalgamation of styles that take their influence from the local South African cultures as well as far-flung exotic destinations such as Japan. He creates his work from a mixture of clays, porcelain and paper. The Japanese style extends to the finishing effects of his work which can be seen in the massive swaths of paint he applied with huge Japanese brushes.
I read a posting that describes the actual colour of his clay pots as a reflection of the “afternoon sun and shadows on the cliffs” surrounding his home. Wow this is such an apt description, which captures the essence of his work perfectly!
His clay is then given life and depth by using natural ingredients which he finds close to home. The level of dedication that goes into this kind of artwork is astonishing. It’s not like us digital designers who simply ‘boot up’ our machines while we make a cup of coffee and are ready to work. Andrew has an oil burning kiln that takes 24 hours to reach its optimum heat (1380 degrees).
Shooooo, now that is seriously hot! Not to mention that he needs to keep a close eye on the kiln at all times to ensure that the heat is maintained at a steady rate. Only after 3 whole days of cooling will Andrew then be able to take a peek inside and see what he has created.
Talk about devotion to ones work!
If you would like to see Andrew Walford’s amazing work first hand, why not join him at his Cape town exhibition at the home of Laurie and Cal Bruns .
240 Nassau Road, Noordhoek, Cape Town (Down Avondrust Circle from Noordhoek Farm Village, 2nd left)
Friday – (9am-8pm)
Saturday & Sunday – (9am-8pm)
You really need to get your hands on some of his pottery to truly appreciate the workmanship that goes into his art.
Come on over and say HI!

You need to be logged in to post blogs.

If you get your hands on one of these awesome golden gramophones it’s a sign that your career is well and truly….well, golden!

These are but a few of the 78 music categories which will be celebrated at the 54th Grammy Awards 2012.
