WINNING DESIGN - The Song of Mermaid - Robsonborges shoutOut on 30/11/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Splishy Splash!!! Congratulations go out to Robsonborges for his stunning first victory on Springleap with his impeccably cool fantasy design entitled, The song of mermaid.
Mermaids are rather mysterious creatures! This amazing design has employed the art of incorporating ‘negative space’ in order to create a more complete piece. It does this by using the tee colour to its full potential, which in this case becomes not only the background colour, but also the main colour for the mermaid and her fishy friends.
To top it all off Robsonborges has created a dazzling gradient effect that silhouettes the mermaid beautifully in its glow and enhances the overall depth of The song of mermaid.
We asked Robson Borges to tell us more about himself, this is what he had to say:
If you would like to see more of Robson Borges amazing designs please cruise across to his personal website….prepare for your jaw to drop to the floor ;) This has come just in time for Christmas, if ya know what I mean…hint hint Santa! Robson we cannot wait to see your next submission, we have no doubt that it’s going to be awesome. WELL DONE!!! |

Deadmau5 mask design shoutOut on 29/11/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

All hail Deadmau5! Recently I did a posting about the groovy news that tech-trance electro megastar Joel Thomas Zimmerman (AKA: Deadmua5) will be gracing South African with his unique brand of pounding sultry tunes mixed with a visual performance like none other.
Perhaps the most iconic and central themes to Deadmau5’s stage persona is his giant mouse head, which he wears during his performances.
I’m sure you are thinking that there are plenty of musicians and DJ’s that use masks, what makes Deadmau5 so special!
His masks are also very well made.
I love the fact that he gets his fans and designers involved when he is creating a new mask. The act of crowdsourcing definitely works in this artists favour. The only drawback to wearing such a mask is the problem of heat. Back in 2010 Deadmau5 collapsed on stage from exhaustion and vomiting….no doubt a huge swelteringly hot mask is not going to help your plight, especially when you consider the crazy schedule of a DJ of his calibre. I suppose this is a fate/consequence that he is now shackled to. This is his persona and I think it will become difficult for him to shake it at this point!
The Deadmau5 masks are simply awesome.

Nando’s - The Last Dictator shoutOut on 28/11/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

BWAHHAHA!!! Nando’s - The Last Dictator
Basically it depicts Robert Mugabe sitting around his dinner table, thinking about all the good times he spent with various other dictators from around the world. This includes a golden AK-47 water pistol toting Ghadaffi and a joyous PW Botha being pushed on a swing in a park. This plays nicely off the madness that recently ensued around the death of Ghadaffi and how these dictator’s days are numbered!
Nando’s is a yummy fast food chain that started in South Africa, which is renowned for its super witty adverts that are often controversial and mega relevant for the time.
What I love about the Nando’s advertising team is that they are so insanely sharp! The Nando’s ‘advertising legend’ has grown to such an extent in South Africa that when something big goes down, we are not interested to hear what the President has to say, but rather what Nando’s will say…its usually more truthful LOL.
Word on the street is that the radio ads will feature a very well known voice….I wonder who it could be?
What do you guys and girls think of the new ad? D PS: Check out this funny advert that came out this week for the ‘Black Tuesday’ freedom of speech palaver. CLASSIC! |

Springleap - Design Resubmissions shoutOut on 25/11/11 by DuncanBoxie in wordUp |

Hi there guys and girls,
We are truly blessed on Springleap to have such an astounding and supremely talented group of designers.
This is by no means a bad thing! We heartily support design resubmissions. If your design does not win the first time around there is no reason why it won’t walk away with a victory in another competition. We have had many cases where designs that are sent in for ‘branded contests’, which don’t manage to win, are then sent in for our Open Theme contests and fair much better.
Here are four fantastic designs, submitted into past branded contests, which have now made their way into our November 2 - Open Theme.
ABOVE - Helping hand by Zenstudio & Be Alive! by Dewedhe
Remember that designs constantly have room to evolve and be improved upon. If your design doesn’t win it is not the end of the world, merely a stepping stone to future glory and a big phat cash prize, hehe!
Here are a few things to consider before you resubmit a design:
I hope this gives you a bit more insight into creating successful design resubmissions. D |

Here at Springleap we are fans of all forms of design. Whether it be print or digital design, we are always interested in checking out artwork that will inspire us to create even more amazing stuff!
This time around we would like to chat about internationally renowned potter Andrew Walford.
Andrew hails from Shongweni in Kwazulu Natal, where he has been creating breathtaking pottery in his secluded studio for going on 40 years. For those of you who have never been to this part of the world let me assure you that it is beautiful beyond belief. I can truly understand why this master potter chose such a spectacular place to create his work, which is essentially ‘from the Earth’. The inspiration that this area stirs in an artist is more powerful than any Muse. ‘Zulu Zen’ is the name that is often cast as a way of describing Andrew Walford’s work. Indeed his mega popular wall tiles are an amalgamation of styles that take their influence from the local South African cultures as well as far-flung exotic destinations such as Japan. He creates his work from a mixture of clays, porcelain and paper. The Japanese style extends to the finishing effects of his work which can be seen in the massive swaths of paint he applied with huge Japanese brushes. I read a posting that describes the actual colour of his clay pots as a reflection of the “afternoon sun and shadows on the cliffs” surrounding his home. Wow this is such an apt description, which captures the essence of his work perfectly!
If you would like to see Andrew Walford’s amazing work first hand, why not join him at his Cape town exhibition at the home of Laurie and Cal Bruns .
240 Nassau Road, Noordhoek, Cape Town (Down Avondrust Circle from Noordhoek Farm Village, 2nd left)
You really need to get your hands on some of his pottery to truly appreciate the workmanship that goes into his art.

Movember inspiration shoutOut on 16/11/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Can you believe we are already halfway through November! The worst thing is that many dudes have dropped the ball and deciding to simply ‘give up’. In the end I decided it best to give you some Movember inspiration - to ensure that you keep that lip caterpillar growing!
I have been looking around online and found plenty of amazing designs that have inspired the Movember inside of me! Take a look below and you will see two illustrations which really made me chuckle.
Now we move on to some more real-world Movember inspiration. I decided to use two actors, who are in some cases, are more famous for their moustaches than their actual careers. Check out Charlie ‘duck walker’ Chaplin and Tom ‘hide your daughters’ Selleck.
Chaplin had one of those moustaches that few men would be brave enough to sport. Honestly, the only person who could pull off anything remotely the same was Hitler…and, well, we don’t question his bravery…or sanity for that matter. Chaplin made this super bizarre moustache style look good!
It’s NOT TOO LATE to get involved in Movember. Cruise across to the Springleap.com Facebook page and check out the Mo or No section. Show your support for men’s health! Don’t worry if you missed out on the first photo, you can start on the second, no worries. Movember is for absolutely everyone. No matter if you are a lady or simply too young to grow a moustache, there is always a way to get involved. Heck, you could even paint one on! Do you have some Movember inspiration for us? Please post your favourite moustache images and illustrations below, or on the Springleap Facebook page AND REMEMBER: Register on the official Movember website too and donate your moustaches to help raise funds for CANSA, men's health and prostate cancer!
PS: Check out this hilarious moustache spread.

Well, he may not like to write about himself, but his super cool designs speak volumes about his talent and personal nature!

Deadmau5 owns his mousy persona…simply, he ‘works’ his like few others are able!

Haha, Nando’s really does serve as a ‘looking glass’ into South African society and our more closely guarded opinions.

The Rolling Stone South African edition will set you back R34.95.

His clay is then given life and depth by using natural ingredients which he finds close to home. The level of dedication that goes into this kind of artwork is astonishing. It’s not like us digital designers who simply ‘boot up’ our machines while we make a cup of coffee and are ready to work. Andrew has an oil burning kiln that takes 24 hours to reach its optimum heat (1380 degrees).
