I am REALLY EXCITED to update you on our new competion that is coming out this month : King of Comments, Queen of Quotes.

Everyone seems to be clammering about this awesome prize!

I think that giving away a Sony Ericsson cellular phone is absolutely the right kind of prize for King of Comments, Queen of Quote – quite simply (if for no other reason) is that this prize is all about top class communication and facilitating it.

Thanks to Sony Ericsson for being so awesome – they also recently dropped off 2 prototype HSUPA PCI-EXPRESS data cards for Eric and myself to make our jobs easier – the cards they gave us are so new that they still have “prototype model” underneath and don’t even have support sections on the SOny Ericsson website yet!!!

I can tell you that these cards are AWESOME – I am picking up signal in areas where my buddies with similar units don’t get reception at all – in fact in such a case I was able to stream a quicktime video for 5 hrs solid!

The cards even have GPS built in – Blows me away how they can squeeze so much in one little space.

So a BIG THANKS to SONY ERICSSON SA especially Jaco and Melissa who make things really happen there.

Jack Black Beer doesn’t have anything to do with the actor at this point (but who knows, maybe one day he’ll be drinking our beer!) Jack Black was a fellow who lived in America during the prohibition times – a maverick brewing legend. Inspired by his spirit and ability to make amazing beer, we’re a local brewery here to bring Cape Town the best possible beer, no matter what…so yah, maybe the pirate thing is kinda fitting too.

It’s 3 hours to go till the opening of the spring tee party at the Curious, Whetstone & Frankley Gallery in Cape Town.

A glass of wine while we appreciate the amazing designs from the June range of springleap tshirts.

I haven’t seen what the amazing guys at Curious, Whetstone & Frankley have come up with to display the winning springleap designs, so I’m pretty excited to get there!

It’s in Obz so if you’re going to be in the area around 6, drop us a mail to get yourself added to the guest list.

Hi springleapers!

Please note that we have just uploaded a brand new, new and improved t-shirt submission kit to the website.

Here are some of the VERY IMPORTANT CHANGES :

1. The black t-shirt template is now a solid black
2. There are a few new rules. Amongst these are :
a. Icon pack users can only use the icons as design elements – They need to have bought and own commercially licensed versions of these pack and may be called to provide proof thereof. Furthermore – the use of these icons may only be design elements – not the main focus and they need to be modified substantially enough that you have made them your own. We decide this on a case by case basis and do not encourage the use of these packs at springleap as we believe that they are counter-productive to the development of artists’ talents.
b. Paintings need to be reduced to 7 unique colours and submitted with colour separations or converted into vectors.
c. the 7 unique colour rule still stands – we you to dsign in up to seven colours on white and light fabrics. On medium and dark tone fabrics, white is always counted as a necessary base colour to screen on even if it does not appear in the artwork.

I find I can only put jet black on the red tee, otherwise its just too bright.

And then I end up changing the colour anyway to match the black design.

A suggestion to springleap – to make the very bright red tee a little less bright please? Maybe i should get a few people to agree with me, in case there are more that like the bright red. It’s a tad blinding in my opinion. Any1 with me say eye, those not, say nose.

I am happy this is moving forward, most people don’t know that using downloaded fonts are not for commercial use. Dont forget you can contact the artist who created the font and ask for permission to use, they might make you pay for it, but they also might allow it for free if you use a link back to them, so depends on the artist!
I have a good friend from columbia who makes some of the best typesets, real organic but still classy and modern..

Also please be aware of one of the most important new rules :

Use of clipart is BANNED. We are absolutely against the use of clipart – specifically stuff like animals, vehicles, buildings, people etc.

Arrows or splats/stains is one thing, but using someone else’s work as your own is not on.

I understand many people think that clipart libraries and places like “DaFont” are free.. but this is only partially true ... in truth they are free only for PERSONAL USE

This is a site for meaningful creators and artists. We want to up the standard of art in SA and show the world that we have what it takes to compete on an international level.

The South African industry has done a lot to harm the mentality of artists thus far by allowing them to believe that the use of clipart as their own simply because they coloured in the lines or changed some of the shape a bit makes it their own.

Come on. Can you tell me in your heart of hearts that this resonates truth? No Ways Jose. It’s a slippery slope. In fact it’s an insult to your own talent in my eyes.

Regarding parody eg : the use of popular culture icons to create parody, we think that there is nothing wrong with this. In fact there is a law that protects parody as freedom of speech… but ONLY if you created the work from scratch. So if you created the work and it’s a clear parody – we are going to allow it.
