Words by the designer:
This design depicts Steve Biko’s past showing his head as a baobab tree that has stood for many years, even though he did not live long. It also shows his legacy by way of the deep roots he laid down before he was killed. As he was known for his writings, I hand-wrote the phrase that he was known for “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” These words can stand for so many things, other than the obvious. He also was the man who coined the phrase “black is beautiful” which was to instill a sense of pride within the black communities at that time. Unfortunately it was his writings that probably led to his demise. I hope I have captured the essence of such an inspiring man.

lovely stuff, would wear that t-shirt proudly! oh and by the way, print the design on the front and the back when you start production ;-) South African’s are so lucky to have so many inspirational figures to draw from – Biko and Mandela to name a few.. Great work Jabanero, keep making us proud.
