I think IA came out on top with this debate, and although scotty came off second best, respect for raising some important issues and sticking to his guns.

Hey scotty

I think you are making some rather scathing remarks at people who are trying really hard to take their design to the next level.

I have given a lot of thought to this matter and we discussed it internally amongst the springleap.com team.

They way I see it is in a case-by-case situation.

So let’s scope out what went down here :

1. IA was upfront and honest about using the vector. I looked at the vector and it is a very boring piece. Really dull colours -great line work, but pretty dull. What IA has done with it is totally take it to a new level and still be honest about it.

We try our best to constantly keep things fresh on the site and I think AI has done that here.

I am not a big fan of using other people’s work as your own, but AI has bought the license to use this piece and he has pulled a serious Andy Warhol on it.

In many ways he has done for this vector (in t-shirt terms) what Van Gogh did for sunsets and flowers – I feel it is a really awesome interpretation of the vector and done totally legally. I have seen tons of work like this before ie stock vector work, but Integral has really taken the competition out with this one – heckle! even mikdog claims he used a Mario block, and I allowed that through because I felt it was a good parody on pop culture.

I think the personal badgering is really a poor show fellas. Please refrain from making personal comments and keep your emotions and egos out of the equation.

Regarding what is real design, – I think you need to differentiate between DESIGN and ILLUSTRATION. VERY separate issues.

The thing is that design can contain elements that are derivative or found as long as the designer has the right to use those elements. Illustration is a totally different topic.

Having said this – I believe the new competition format is really going to put A LOT of pressure on the springleap designers to up their game right across the board.

Let the games begin!

thanx mikdog atleast there are still those true designers out there who appreciate authenticity! goggl3boy you know whats really funny, the fact that all of your “original designs” which you so proudly name dropped as being totally your own,are really average. its obvious that you are one of those people who do need other people’s work to make your work look good or just a bit better than poor. dont flatter yourself i didnt look through all your designs. the thumbnails weren’t that interesting & were pretty level one. and that fire angel thing? ummm whatever how boring & generic can you get. shocking concept. and dont even waste your breath telling me to upload my designs and what are you doing about it to add value to springleap. i can do what i please just like you running around and downloading vectors & putting them together badly. not here to argue with you, so get over yourself, last message i direct your way.

Am I sensing some anger Kumquat? Where are your logical arguments? Calling me a retard or a bitch loses you some credibility there son.

Yes, I do use stock sometimes. Why would I condone the use of stocks and not use them myself? Look at my design Angelfire. I used stock tribals and manipulated a photo to create what I think is an awesome design, something that was just an image in my head before that. Then also, if you saw my designs, you should have seen Flame-Out, E.T. Washout and GAS Monkey which is purely my own work.

So go put on a clean pair of undies, and come do some lame name calling again, I’m sure everyone finds you amusing.

Ah man. Even though I don’t quite agree with Scotty’s tone of voice, I DO agree with what he’s saying. I was browsing through GOMEDIA’S vector packs to see what all the fuss is about:

http://gomedia.us/arsenal2/

And I recognized some winning stuff had used it. I think the Markhams winner may have used some wings or something, just caught a glimpse, maybe it was part of their own vector pack. If the dude created the guy in vector from scratch, props to him. But even then, I see designs on other sites where I recognize they used similar vectors. Suddenly bleaked me out a bit. What’s the point? Its like LEGO, snapping stuff together. Bleh. If I owned a site I would DEFINITELY not allow people to use other people’s work, bought or free. Kind of defeats the purpose if you ask me. I’d ONLY want stuff created 100% from scratch. No copy/paste vector splotches and skulls, no birds or fish vectors, nothing. I wanna reward the true creatives, and I’m kind of putting my foot in my mouth here a bit because I entered a Super Mario Question Mark Block for nest month as one of my 3 entries, don’t know if it will get accepted, but the other stuff is 100% from scratch. Anyways, I DO think scotty has a point, and although collage IS a creative art, I don’t see eye to eye with using other people’s work. Sure, you bought it, and you’re tweaking it a little bit, adding new colours and whatnot, adding more vector elements, I dunno. Personally I’d feel as though I’m shortchanging myself if I did that. You kind of have to make it YOUR OWN is what my art teacher/lecturer always told me, if you’re going to use other people’s stuff. I guess you can’t argue with the vector artists who buy packs. They’re not breaking the rules per se. I just don’t like it and I wouldn’t wear any shirts that I knew had vector packs used on them. Kind of like wearing fake fur I guess. So, scotty, we can bitch and moan all we like, but at the end of the day, Springleap decides what goes and what doesn’t, and if they’re gonna allow copy/paste stuff, then we’re gonna have to accept it or move on to greener pastures. Or carry on dissing the okes on their own comments page but that’s bad etiquette. Hey, maybe do it enough and you might action something. Who knows?

i finally understand why you are being a little bitch crusader about using stock vectors, you do it too! no wonder, no surprise there. with your little tribal vectors. do you want springleap to become a competition about who can colour in the lines the best? make it one big colouring in book full of Go Media vector packs. that will definitly showcase SA’s talent hey retard?

shoutBack on 27/11/08 by scotty

theres no soul in selling…and throwing stuff you haven’t made yourself at a competition like this is kind of disrespectful in a way i can’t quite put my finger on. Call me naive but i feel a little ill that thats the spirit of all this.

haha, nice name drops there Scotty Kumquat mah boy. Easiest way to get ahead in your argument I guess.

There are different types of designers here. Some can compose great looking tees using stock vectors, and others have the ability to create from scratch. Its not up to you to label who is a true designer and who is not. Fact remains that they all contribute to this site…you have contributed nothing but negativity so far. Submit some designs start giving constructive crit instead of bashing certain designers and sucking up to others.

here is something I wrote a while ago that shows how I feel about the stock issue.
