Crop Circles gone retro! Was just playing around with a circles vs squares theme and this materialized, was quite stok’d that it all seems to fit together so well, with crop circles being made by aliens and then using the space invaders symbol for the alternate squares.

Look to the heavens for TokyoGoGo’s Crop Pixels design. The Space Invaders ARE out there!
1. What were you thinking when you first started the design?
I wanted to create an image based on crop circles. That’s all I was thinking at first. Was quite happy just using a few squares instead of circles, But then thought of the whole space invaders concept and yeah, ran with it.
2. What does this design make you feel?
CropPixels is definitely a step in a different direction for me, working with stronger concepts. Just really glad it got the reception it did on Springleap.
3. How long did it take you to complete your piece?
Yeah this one was a bit tricky, whenever I thought it was done I ended up going back and adding tiny extra bits! Like the hay bails, apple tree, birds at the top. Eventually had to run away from the screen and hide for a while. All round about two days.
4. Did any other artwork inspire you to create this?
I was paging through my Gama-Go book and spotted a crop circles design, that was basically the inspiration right there. Was just a case of coming up with something that hadn’t been done before.
5. Do you think this design reflects your state of mind from when it was created?
In a way, I was getting a bit tired of my usual style, and just wanted to try something different.
6. Is this your normal style or an experiment?
Not at all, I tend to work with outlines a lot, so throwing them out was definitely an experiment.
7. Who do you dedicate this design to?
All retro gamers out there who grew up with Space Invaders, Mario, Contra, AlleyCat, Frogger and Pong.
8. If you could change anything in this design what would it be?
I’m still not sure if I should’ve placed a scarecrow in there somewhere….
9. What kind of person do you see wearing this design?
I think the tee is rather versatile. Gamers would take preference though!
10. If you could pick any artist to recreate this piece for you who would it be?
Charles Schulz, can just picture a little Snoopy sleeping on the barn!
