1. So tell me about where you grew up, have you lived there all your life or have you bounced around a lot?
I was born in Honolulu , Hawaii and no I wasn’t an army baby! However after a few years in the fun and sun, we moved to Minnesota where most of my family resides. I was raised in Saint Paul, Minnesota , the capitol of our beautiful state. We did move a lot as children, actually 13 times before I was 18, but who’s counting?! Lets just say my Mother, likes change; I blame it on her Bohemian heritage,
2. When you were a child what did you want to grow up to be and what would you say is your dream job now?
When I was younger, I wanted to do anything with animals. I wanted to be an Oceanographer, dolphin trainer, zoologist, and even a vet. The older I got, the more I wanted to work with people. Nowadays, my dream job would be designing for a major apparel or fashion company, and on the side, running a restaurant, focusing on comfort and soul food. Something about the way you feel when someone smiles or makes that “MMM” sound when they take their first bite of your food, is the best feeling, next to knowing someone else took their time to purchase and wear a piece of apparel you designed.
3. Have you got a big family, how many?
My family is pretty big, a lot of uncles and aunts, even more cousins you can count, and the best pair of grandparents a young man can ask for. My family inspires me to have a big family as well. You always have someone to lean on, someone to pull you up when your down, without my support of my big family, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
4. What is without doubt the best experience of your life?
The best experience until this point in my life is becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. With that process, I know now I can do anything. It might sound cliché, but there is a time in our life, when we hit that wall, and feel we can’t go on, or you don’t have the strength to continue, my fraternity showed me I can dig down deep and do anything I set my mind and heart to.
5. If you could have any super power what would it be?
I would love super strength, or super speed, or real cool vision, but I would really love to fly. The freedom, the limitless boundaries, the rush of the wind in your ears, I am sure can be compared to nothing else, plus I would look SUPER cool in a cape and tights!
6. If you could hang out with any star for a day who would it be?
He’s not really a star, but I would like to pick the brain of Barrack Obama. I would like to thank him and Hilary Clinton for showing young black and minority males, and women that you don’t have to give up on ANY dream, anything is possible now. When I was younger, I would say I want to be President, but I never really meant it, now little kids can really say it with conviction, and take the appropriate steps to become ruler of the free world. Man or women, black or white, its possible now.
7. Who would you consider to be the greatest influence on your actions?
My greatest influence is my mother. She is strongest catalyst in my life, and without her, who knows where I would be. I was supposed to be a statistic. She was a single mother, raising 2 kids, working 3-4 jobs at times just to make sure food was on the table and we were able to participate in sports and activities. I would never know when Christmas time comes around that she was struggling to make ends meet. She always did it with a smile, and I applaud her effort in making my siblings and I, the people we are today, Thank you Mom.
8. Describe your artistic style in one word.
Balanced.
9. What music are you listening to at the moment?
Common, Erykah Badu, anything with Kanye West, The Roots…
10. If you could get away with any one crime what would it be?
Robbing a bank! My business, and buzz about my designs would grow exponentially if I had the capital and marketing opportunities some of the big boys do. It will probably feel better at the end if I did all the work for the money, but it would sure speed this process up a little bit! If anyone wants to rob one with me, we can split the profits right down the middle, %60 for me, %40 for you!
