Summerai by robbielee
I designed this one when I had scooter fever after I bought my first motor scooter this past June. Plus, Ai means love in Japanese, so summerai means all sorts of neat things…
Summerai Design INFO with robbielee by DuncanBoxie
What could be cooler than a samurai sitting on his scooter whilst munching an ice cream during a hot summers day?
This design is one of the best old school meets contemporary fusions that I’ve seen in ages.
1. What were you thinking when you first started the design?
I had just gotten my scooter, and I wanted to do a shirt about scooters.
2. What does this design make you feel?
Excited about the summer, but also relaxed because the shirt color and overall design is kind of mellow.
3. How long did it take you to complete your piece?
I spent WAY too much time working on the different aging textures. Drawing it was fairly quick though. I had my wife pose on my scooter for me.
4. Did any other artwork inspire you to create this?
Probably. Cant think of any off-hand, though.
5. Do you think this design reflects your state of mind from when it was created?
Sure as a shuttlecock, it does.
6. Is this your normal style or an experiment?
My normal style has usually involved robots for the past year or so. But I do like to work in a simplified realistic manner, so sort of.
7. Who do you dedicate this design to?
My friend Claude, who looks sort of like the Summerai. Also, he always supports my shirt designs,
helps me when I move, and feeds my cats.
8. If you could change anything in this design what would it be?
I think it would be cool to sneak my signature in there somewhere. Otherwise, I spent way too much time tweaking it to have left anything that I could find to change.
9. What kind of person do you see wearing this design?
Samurais and the occasional ronin. And winners!
10. If you could pick any artist to recreate this piece for you who would it be?
Edgar R. McHerly, but I’m afraid I might like his version better, so maybe a little kid who can’t draw very well.
