About: all work and all play

This is Nicetomeetyou! with nicetomeetyou by DuncanBoxie

Nicetomeetyou came out tops in one of the most fiercely contested theme competitions to date, Down The Rabbit Hole! Lets find out a bit more about this brilliant designer.

1. So tell me about where you grew up, have you lived there all your
life or have you bounced around a lot?

I was born in Cape Town, and have lived here my whole life. I plan to spend a while working overseas in a year or so, but I’ll definitely come back. It’s a very cool place to live.

2. When you were a child what did you want to grow up to be and what
would you say is your dream job now?

I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. I always loved comics, and spent a lot of time inventing new super heroes and drawing them when I was a kid. I left school knowing I wanted to do something visual, but without really knowing what career paths were available. I did fine art at University Of Cape Town, specialising in digital media, but left before completing my course. I then did a two year multimedia design course (basically web design), where I started to get interested in illustration as a career. Since then I have been working as a graphic designer, trying to build up skills and a portfolio which will allow me to work in illustration full-time. My dream job is to be paid a lot of money to draw whatever I want. Kind of obvious really, but that would be great.

3. Have you got a big family, how many?

Two brothers and a mom and dad (not together any more) in my immediate family, and my mom and dad’s partners. They’re all involved in the media in some way, as photographers, designers, writers and journalists, (except my older brother who is a predator research scientist) so it’s not surprising that I went into something media-related like graphic design.

4. What is without doubt the best experience of your life?

I have had no experiences which are without doubt the best in my life. I don’t like that idea because it implies that there was a moment which was super awesome, and nothing else can ever be as good. I hope to exponentially increase the amount of fun I have as time goes on.

5. If you could have any super power what would it be?

Hmm that’s a tough one. Let me check my comic collection… maybe Swamp Thing? He can control plants, which doesn’t seem that useful, but he can send his consciousness anywhere in the world and grow a new body from the plants that are there, and he’s pretty much indestructible. And he can make any wood or plant matter, dead or alive, do anything he wants, or maybe Morph from X-men, who can turn into pretty much anything he wants.

6. If you could hang out with any star for a day who would it be?

Robert Downey Junior. He seems like he would be awesome to hang out with. And he’s probably on the guest list for everywhere in the universe.

7. What is your power animal and why?

Some kind of cat, maybe. I dunno why, but I’ve been doing a lot of pictures of cats recently. Astronaut cats, 80’s skateboarding cats with afro’s, giant monster cats, all kinds.

8. If you were trapped in Wonderland, what is the first thing you would do?

Start an awesome band with the guys from the Mad Hatter’s tea party, playing mighty 80’s synth-pop. Mad Hatter on keyboards, March Hare on drums. The doormouse would play bass.

9. What is your favourite South African band?

I don’t really like to pick favourites. It kind of seems a bit limiting. But lately I’ve been really impressed with some of the local electronic acts. Dank is pretty interesting. I wouldn’t call him a favourite yet, but he’s definitely worth watching out for. He seems to be developing a style that could turn into something very cool. Also, although I’ve never been a huge fan of Fokofpoliesiekar, I am enjoyng the stuff being produced by the newer acts formed by the members (Aking, Van Coke Cartel). They’re doing stuff that has enough commercial appeal to play big shows, but it’s still less mainstream than most of the successful SA bands out there. And they work damn hard. You gotta respect that.

10. What is your personal mission statement?

All work and all play. Of course there has to be a separation between professional and personal life, but I plan to eventually be in a position where I’m being paid to do stuff that I would do for fun.
