Keeping in mind the theme of rock…I was thinking of what kind of “ROCK” ideas I could do with out some crazy dragon or epic looking character with lightning bolts…I was immediately drawn to memories of old punk rock music zines. I did this design inspired by those photocopied, underground, phenomena. Hope you like it!

STAYIN ALIVE is the proud winner of our The Hard of Rock theme competition. Suburbanhijinx really pulled off a hardcore old school punk rock vibe with this killer design.

1. What were you thinking when you first started the design?

How the hell can I portray the “HARD OF ROCK” with out sick ass, bad ass, crazy ass illustration with some sort of giant serpent or thor like god.

2. How does this design make you feel personally?

Reminds of high school. That was when I was really getting into music and learning about all these different punk bands and reading about this underground punk music zines over on the west coast of the United States. It’s kind of a nostaglia feeling.

3. How long did it take you to complete your piece?

This one took about 7 hours over two days! I was blocked creatively with this theme, then three nights before the deadline I had this idea of a punked out skull with the photocopy, grimey vibe. Started working the next day.

4. Did any other artwork inspire you to create this?

Visions of those photocopied punk zines helped me put this together.

5. Do you think this design reflects your state of mind from when it was created?

Not really. It is more reflective of my interpretation of the theme for this competition.

6. Is this your normal style or an experiment?

Definitely my normal style. It has dirty grungy background with a main character looking a little photocopied and halftoned out. I think for the next couple comps I’m going to experiment with some watercolor halftones and different elements. I don’t want the people of springleap to grow tired of me!

7. Who do you dedicate this design to?

Since my dad is the biggest fan of this design and requested that I generously give him one of my winning peices that I get this one goes out to him!

8. If you could change anything in this design what would it be?

I think with this one I’d keep everything exactly the same! I went back and forth with my girlfriend about different color combinations and I finally decided on the one I submitted! (She preferred a different scheme with less colors) I think this one is as close to perfect as you can get.

9. What kind of person do you see wearing this design?

Old school punk rockers!

10. If you could pick any artist to recreate this piece for you who would it be?

It’s hard to think of an artist to recreate this piece…are there any volunteers?!?
