WOW – it was wonderful hearing Louise Carver’s attitude regarding the issue of international and local branding that is so prevalent in South Africa

Whilst a caller that followed up brought up the point that differentiation is a source of pride for us South Africans so that we can voice our pride in “Local” artists – I cannot say I agree.

I think that it creates a dualistic mindset which is a point of great strife for South African artists across the board.

It creates a barrier between South Africans and the international community. It makes us think that there are 2 standards and propagates one of my most loathed statements : “It’s good for South Africa” (ie relative to an overseas standard).

Let’s face it – we are part of the international community. We have businesses that participate in a massive way every day in international endeavors. We have international films being shot on our shores, cosmopolitan cities and South African artists touring the world.

Every day we participate and are inundated by media on the Internet. Quite frankly : WE ARE THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.

Having this idea that there are 2 standards is ludicrous and you will find that people that have this mindset in place are the selfsame people who most often are complaining that South Africans aren’t making it in those arenas.

It felt reassuring to hear the words that I have been using in a lot of mag interviews lately resounding from one of South Africa’s most awesome ambassadors.
