I am happy that the mods are proactive about this. And to South Africas defense, it has been a well known urban myth in the design world about the 30 % rule, and it seems a lot of young designers learn it as truth, good catch Kingslip. Well that is a totally different matter – parody is when you take something from popular culture or another well known image etc and make satire of it within a social or popular context. Last month’s winning t-shirt was a classic parody of the typical Americanized Simpson stereotypical family – but the idea was brilliant and original. I have spoken with Tay about the issues – and she is VERy apologetic and has asked for her designs to be removed. She will submit only original work in the future. This s something I go on about a lot – the Garment industry in particular in SA has really got a lot to answer for -they have allowed artists to believe that if you change a design by 25% or more the design is no longer the property of the creator. Let me tell you that this is a lotacrocka crap. Quite frankly – if you didn’t make it yourself… it ain’t yours. Period. This is not the first discussion I have had with local SA artists about this matter and the end all be all of it is this : Tracers and fakers be warned – a reconing is at hand. Springleap is cleaning up design in SA and bringing back the goods. Reminding artists everywhere of who they are intuitively and to grow organically from within that space. Yea that does really suck that you: a) thought you’d get away with it b) actually tried to profit from it c) have the nerve to comment on anyones work, when you don’t do your own… I do believe its not a direct rip, and to your credit, you made it better and cleaner…but cmon now tay.
