Guys, I think you are deluded to believe that the work is worth R50k. The fact is that the community (you guys included) have been screaming for a while now that the designs should come before a design panel and we should use the voting as an indicator. It seems that no matter the effort or how aquiecent we are to the community demands we are still criticised. So how can we possibly keep you happy? Clearly we cannot. If I had a very good design made I could achieve this for less than 4k, in fact industry standard is about a third of that for a tee design. Do the math guys. Think of the cost of the garment, the cost of printing, courier, running staff and having offices, maintaining the site…. Then add the prize money and figure how many garments we need to sell to just cover the costs. The prize money is high enough- if we were selling greater volumes, we would love to change this in the future. For the moment r4k is a salary for some and if you charged yourself out at R250ph it would be 16hrs solid work. Do the math. Priduce amazing design – I know you are more than capable considering your portfolios.

Yo Mikdog, yep agreed to all. I can understand the pains that Springleap goes through to “bring out local talent”, but if the hook’s not big enough, the bigger fish’ll not bite hard enough. And if big fish’s what’s needed then maybe there’s no two ways around it. Otherwise it’s all up to chance. And that’s the beauty and pitfall of crowdsourcing, in a nutshell.

If I may offer my 2 cents – I think you need to up the prize money. If this is going to be a re-branding of Springleap and you’re making it your official shirt and you plan to use the design on the website, its a little cheeky expecting a really good result for R4k. Not only that, but expecting people to do a full-on job with only a ‘maybe’ chance of payment. In a more regular situation someone would pitch their work, you’d say what you like about it and what needs changing, and the designer and you would work together to achieve a good result. The designs posted in the compo would perhaps give you an idea who you’d like to work with, but I get the feeling you’re not going to have people seriously investing hours to come up with something truly special if payment’s not guaranteed, or if the prize money remains at R4k. You’ll attract more designers if the prize money went up to R50k, or you’re better off getting someone who’s work you like and working with them together to get the result you want. Other than that I think you’ll be lucky if you get a decent half-baked design. “Work for me, and if you’re lucky I just may pay you. You’re not working hard enough?! I don’t understand!” “Cheers.”
