shoutOut on 13/3/12 by DuncanBoxie in wordUp

Putting glass to good use:

It is time for designers to step-up and help lead the way to a better, cleaner tomorrow. Glass recycling is an efficient form of ‘green living’ and we need YOU to use your design skills to show the world just how important it is to our future!

These days everybody talks about global warming and pollution, but we are left asking the question - what can we really do to help?

One of the answers to this question lies in recycling, especially when it comes to important materials such as glass. It is fundamental that every single man, woman and child on Earth begins to understand the importance of recycling and how they can make a positive change!

Organisations such as The Glass Recycling Company are on a mission to raise awareness around the importance of glass recycling and how vital it is to regenerating our environment, which is under attack from extreme pollution and by those who are not yet educated in its importance.

‘Glass going Green’ is a contest where you are not only tasked with creating an amazing t-shirt design, but more importantly, making a difference and educating the public to recycle glass.

Designers are in a unique position as you are on the forefront of ‘green living’, recycling and incorporating sustainable solutions. Who better to educate the world through clever thought provoking submissions than our own amazing designers?!

Facts about The Glass Recycling Company:

  • The Glass Recycling Company is South Africa’s national organisation responsible for promoting the reuse of glass and facilitating the recovery of waste glass for recycling.

  • This in order to protect the environment and effect sustainable environmental improvements and at the same time create income generation opportunities for unemployed individuals and in particular for historically disadvantaged South Africans.

  • The Glass Recycling Company offers assistance and support to entrepreneurs with an interest in running their own glass recycling business. The organisation has helped set up 900 new entrepreneurs throughout the country. As a result of this these entrepreneurs are actively involved in creating income generating opportunities for thousands of individuals through the repurchase of waste glass.

The Glass Recycling Company’s mission statement is “to promote the sustainable recycling of glass to protect our environment”.

  • The Company’s vision is “to ensure that glass recycling is sustainable and environmentally friendly”.

  • The organisation’s strategic objectives include increasing  the recycling rate of glass through marketing communications and capacity building

  • This company does not recycle the glass itself – rather it promotes and increases the recovery of waste glass for recycling by creating awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

Facts about glass recycling:

  • Recycling reduces the demand for raw materials. There is no shortage of the materials used, but they do have to be quarried, meaning that there are environmental advantages to recovering and recycling glass. For every tonne of recycled glass used, 1.2 tonnes of raw materials are preserved.

  • Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without losing or compromising its quality, purity and clarity.

  • The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for one hour. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.

  • Recycling two bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea. Energy costs drop between 2-3% for every 10% recycled glass used in the glass manufacturing process.
