I explored the idea of africa being the face of a hungry but bright eyed child, looking into the depths of your soul, the grungy splatter effect adds to the idea that africa, although beautiful and full of wonder is also a hard and dangerous place to live, three colours on black… |

This design depicts Steve Biko’s past showing his head as a baobab tree that has stood for many years, even though he did not live long. It also shows his legacy by way of the deep roots he laid down before he was killed. As he was known for his writings, I hand-wrote the phrase that he was known for “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” These words can stand for so many things, other than the obvious. He also was the man who coined the phrase “black is beautiful” which was to instill a sense of pride within the black communities at that time. Unfortunately it was his writings that probably led to his demise. I hope I have captured the essence of such an inspiring man.

This design is a tribute to Steve Biko. He was the man who was known to have made these two famous statements, “Black is beautiful” and “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor, is the mind of the oppressed”. I thought these to be very wise words and so I incorporated them into a design. Statements like this were made so that Black people of the time could be proud of who they are. I hope this design gets that concept across. Oh and you may notice the not so subtle shape of Africa with South Africa forming his beard. |
