1UP!!!!
Springleap.com sends out a mega congratulatory WOOOT WOOOT to our latest winner Eggzoo. Everybody knows the classic Mario Brothers characters from the legendary Nintendo franchise. Mario & Luigi have appeared in countless sub-culture designs over the years, but this is certainly the best that has ever come through on Springleap, or most other design contest websites for that matter. Our Open Theme November 2 was Eggzoo’s first contest with Springleap and also his first win! This is a rare phenomenon. Usually new designers need to find their groove and see what kind of designs work for the community. However, Eggzoo chose the perfect design to kick off his Springleap career. Using such a universally popular theme like the Mario Brothers is always sure to generate interest and popularity quickly…as long as the quality is there - and that it definitely is! While the Mario Brothers theme is relatively common with regards to sub-culture, it does not mean that it is always easy to win with it. The very fact that it is ‘popular’ means that you have to work double hard to just make it equal to other top submissions. Old Friend is so much more than we are used to seeing from the Mario Brothers theme, and the community echoed this sentiment from the start. The design received massive ‘vote recognition’ and a stream of positive comments from Springleap members the world over!
This design is going to be a huge seller and we have no doubt that our certified resellers will be ‘chomping at the bit’ to get their hands on it. If you want to say hello and congratulate Eggzoo, please pop across to his Springleap profile page, or comment on the Old Friend design page. We for one are very excited to see what this designer comes up with next. Will it be retro, something quirky like his Strawberry Crab, or perhaps something totally unexpected? We can't wait to see more!
Well done & welcome to the Springleap family ! Duncan |

Metallica 30th Anniversary - 4 New Songs shoutOut on 14/12/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Metallica is and always will be one of my top bands of all time!
Metallica have just celebrated their 30th year together, making this a very important year for them. To celebrate this auspicious occasion the band played 4 huge concerts in their hometown of San Francisco. James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo rocked the crowds with a range of sets which took fans through a whirlwind journey of the past 30 years. They even had insanely cool special guests such as Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Faith No More. However, perhaps the most nostalgic and mosh-worthy appearance was none other than Metallica’s original guitarist, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth fame.
What made these concerts even more special was the fact that they performed 4 previously unreleased songs, one for each gig!
SO what did you think? Was it your cup of tea and would you classify this as a more ‘new school Metallica’?
Personally I’m EXTRA stoked that Metallica is celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year, because I celebrate my 30th birthday in a few days time myself! Happy anniversary guys...keep rocking!

Miguel Endara - Stippling ink art shoutOut on 13/12/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Now here is some amazing art that will make you go dotty! Put your hands together for ink art ‘stippling’ guru Miguel Endara. The art of stippling is when you create a design by painstakingly ‘dotting’ a page using an ink pen. This is a design style that is most certainly not for the impatient types, it takes hours upon hours to achieve an effect that looks even half decent. Thats right boys and girls, the designs you see here are not sketched...they are dotted (stippled).
Stippling is by no means a ‘new ink art’ technique. Heck, I’m sure most of us have made a rudimentary attempt at stippling in art class, or randomly when we are doodling at home.
The design that has been created in this video is entitled "Hero" and features the face of Miguel’s father. How many dots did it take Miguel to create this piece? Try a mind-boggling 3.2 million ink dots (closer to an exact number of 3,213,000).
The first time I saw the art of stippling done on any form of technical level was a good ten years ago, by my cousin’s best friend. She had also created a face using stippling for her buddies birthday and I was pretty impressed.
I would love to see stippling used to create an awesome t-shirt design on Springleap.com Get stippling :D |

Tiago Hoisel is an artistic dynamo!
This insanely talented designer began his professional career after graduating from the University of Estado da Bahia in graphic design. Ever since then his skills have increased exponentially with a transition into the world of digital design which has amplified his power to new heights of awesome! He has now been smashing the norms of the design world for a good 5 years. Tiago was born in Salvador and grew up in a relatively sleepy little town called Ilhéus. He worked as an illustrator at an image retouching studio back in 2008 but has subsequently moved to São Paulo, where he runs his own studio together with 4 elite design partners, who are reshaping the world of illustration as we know it, one sexy pixel at a time!
It seems that his main weapon of choice is Adobe Photoshop. He employs this mighty piece of software to full benefit by making use of its amazing brushes. This allows him to create a more vivid and striking final product.
I’m beyond blown away by this guy! If you would like to see more of Tiago Hoisel’s fantastic artwork please visit his website and Techno Image page…you will not be sorry!

Born this way? Yes indeed this lady most certainly was!
Lady Gaga has become a music sensation of enormous influence over the past few years. Theer are few people who are not familiar with at least a bit of her work. Her showy style and belting voice has set her apart from Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (aka: Lady Gaga) grew up in New York and started her musical journey from a young age. She started bashing away at a piano at the tender age of 4 and wrote her first ballad at 13. A year later she took her first step into the often soul-crushing world of ‘open mike night’. After being scouted by Akon her career has soared on wings lashed with jet engines. She has won herself 5 Grammy Music Awards and 13 MTV Video Music Awards. She has also landed herself at the top of Forbes Celebrity 100 list....BOOOOM! I could harp on about her career and achievements until the cows come home, but I will rather supply you with a link to her full career/life history ;) Perhaps the most central attraction of Lady Gaga, besides her incredible voice, is her outrageous wardrobe. With influences from artist like Queen, Madonna, Michael Jackson and David Bowie there should be no surprise at her uniquely flamboyant style. Let’s take a look at the Top 15 Lady Gaga outfits that have made us all laugh, cry, raise our eyebrows, drool, gasp…and most importantly, smile ear-to-ear!

Bad packaging design - Coca-Cola shoutOut on 7/12/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Packaging design is indeed a frightening beast in the world of design! The latest example of bad packaging design comes from none other than mega-brand Coca-Cola who recently released their new ‘festive season’ can. What the heck were they thinking?
The new Coca-Cola festive can takes a bold step where no Coke can had gone before….all white.
Honestly I think the Coca-Cola marketing executives had their hearts in the right place – the design was not only festive, but also intended to raise awareness for polar bears amid the heightened concern of global warming and its impact on their natural environments. Coca-Cola has donated 3 million dollars to the World Wildlife Fund (nice one guys) in order to bolster conservation efforts for these beautiful animals. You will see the can is emblazoned with a family of cute polar bears that track across the bottom of the can.
Firstly you can barely see the bears against the white of the can and secondly the can itself looks extremely close to the Diet Coke can design. Some people even complain that the Coke tastes different in a white can, this is obviously rubbish, but hey….it’s amazing what the mind can do and how much sway it holds over how we perceive taste. Well, it’s not only Coca-Cola who created bad packaging design for cola cans in the past. Just take a look at Pepsi’s super-bad new can design and you will see just what ugly is. Their super simplistic new design totally destroys the fun, energetic, design of the past. Talk about clinical and totally uninspiring. When will people learn that logo design doesn’t have to be completely minimal to be effective? This is taking it a bit too far! Bad packaging design is all around us and it is seriously interesting that it’s not only the inexperienced companies that are making ‘epic fails’ in the design department, but even the big boys with some the most iconic work of all time. While this is a pretty nasty blunder for Coca-Cola it’s nowhere near as big a mess up as the time when they tried to change the actual recipe of the drink itself, haha….now that was a supreme FAIL! |

It’s time to reveal who was the ‘last follicle standing’ in our Facebook Movember challenge!
Congratulations to our lucky furry-lipped winners! Our 1st place Movember King is Collin Allin.
Some of the Springleap.com team also attended the Cape Town Movember Gala Parté at Trinity, which was an event of note. So many mo-wielding chaps went out of their way to dress-up in crazy hilarious costumes to suit their moustache personas. Just take a look at the Parté photos and you will see what I mean...it was such a blast!
If you would like to find out more about Movember and what you can look forward to next year, please check out the original posting!
Thank you to everybody who took part, you really made this rock. |

Time for something special! Get ready to break in the festive season with an amazing summer market which will set the tone for the rest of an amazing year-end! Come and join the Springleap team as we light up the Fringe Handmade Creative Goods Market with the very best of our awesome t-shirts on offer, as well as a few of our very cool hoodies.
The Fringe Handmade Creative Goods Market has been created through the partnership of the most important stakeholders in the area, such as, the Cape Craft and Design Institute and the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC), Woodheads and the Fledge Creative Catalyst for young designers. This is not your average market with the same ‘yawn worthy’ offerings that you find at any given ‘flea market’, this is a celebration of South African ingenuity, creativity and pure design magic.
The ‘Fringe’ for those of you who don’t know is the area in Cape Town that lies on the outskirts of the major CBD. It has fast become a Mecca for up-and-coming artistic types and is home to forward thinking design institutions such as the CTFC. Springleap is proud to be part of this funk-tastic design zone, which stands in company with some of the finest creatives in South Africa.
The Fringe Handmade: Creative Goods Market
We hope to see you all there!
