Easter Vortex ends in Fire Inferno shoutOut on 13/4/09 by EranEyal in wordUp | on 18/8/11 by TheBrigand | 13

This Easter, Springleap decided to send the team to Vortex to spread the word and tell all the Vortex peeps aboout us (and have a darn cool time too! Vortex is a reknown Trance party that is well known for Easter and New Year’s Eve partying. usually attended by thousands of revellers and lasting 3 days, you need to have real stamina to get through these. This Easter Vortex was helld about 45 minutest outside of Cape Town along the N1, not too far from Klamutz The Springleap.ccm team had a great time talking to people about all things Springleap and daning the night and day away when not on shift… until about 4AM Sunday when a fire broke out and cooked the proverbial Easter Bunny. At this point it is unknown how the fire broke out but it quickly became and inferno that engulfed 7 vehicles and a large portion of the surrounding bush and forest. It is also unknown how many people were injured or what the value of the assessed loss is. I was at the chillout tent listening to my good pal Craig Shackleton’s -aka Craig Shacid - incredible set, when I noticed a pillar of red smoke billowing from the furthermost parking area. Chaos ensued as the fire quickly expanded and before I knew it I was carrying somme poor guy to the medicc for treatment of smoke inhalation and inhalation burns. The Springleap team did a superb job of packing up quickly while revellers were evacuated as quickly as possible. Luckily everyone worked hard together and the most dangerous fire areas were quelled. 2009 Easter Vortex certainly wasbon fire this year, but even in the midst of a disasterous inferno, the best of people’s spirits and natures revealed themselves in the lack of chaos and at how many people rushed to the aid of the organisers to assist the struggling and help fight the fire. A hearty thanks from Springleap to the organisers of Vortex who did a remarkable job of saving us all with quick thinking, calm minds and great reactivity.

Springleap Loves... Origins Roasters Coffee Connoisseurs shoutOut on 18/4/09 by EranEyal in wordUp | on 18/8/11 by TheBrigand | 5

This is the first in my “Super Thumbs Up” to the Springleap.com’s team favorite people, things and places. now everyone that knows Eric and I know our love for great coffee. YUMMMM! What some people know is that that I am actually a fully qualified coffee barista. That’s basically like a coffee cocktail super barman. He’s that man behind the machine who makes the coffee dream a super caffeinated reality. Making a great cappuccino is an absolute art. Coffee connoisseurs will know that it’s about a few different things - and every bit needs to be just right. The coffee needs to come from the right beans - Arabica is the best! Then the coffee needs to be roasted just right - not too much or two little. 5 seconds either way makes a huge difference! The grind needs to be PERFECT - too fine and the coffee will be over-extracted, too course and the coffee will be underextraced. 7 grams of coffee makes the perfect espresso, which is the base for all great coffee drinks that coffee connoisseurs know and love. Now, when the grind is perfect for the humidity and altitude - heckle - It makes a difference!!! - then the coffee grind produces the perfect cuppa - the fuel of all great design :P Then you need to get the micro-froth right… holy moly! Yep the milk needs to have the perfect texturing that makes the perfect espresso into the perfect cappuccino - the most loved of all coffee concoctions. So yeah - there is all this and loads more to pleasing the true coffee connoisseur predilection for cosmic coffee instead of caffeinated catastrophe. The top dudes on the block are without a doubt Origins Roasters in Cape Town headed up by the inimitable Dave Donde - Coffee Expert, Entrepreneur, Social Media Man of Mystery, Radio DJ, Car Journo… yep! Dave used to be a farmer who struck onto a great vibe with Origins Roasters - The top coffee roasters in South Africa, Barista school and outlet. Origins is situated in Hudson Street in Cape Town and is considered THE spot for amazing coffee and tea (yep - recently they opened their tea room with over 130 teas from all over the world - Today i bought some amazing Japanese Sencha tea from Japan - the AWESOMENESS!!!! - you can also book yourself in for a full 1hr Taiwanese Tea Ceremony… an incredible experience in a sublime environment). Today Origins teaches the barristas and sells their awesome coffee through a number of different avnues including Knead Bakery, Melissas, Sol Kerzner’s new 7-star One and Only hotel , Urban Ground and more. It has become a real success story. The Springleap.com team often love coming to Origins for a great coffee or tea treat - I have a great selection of some of the world’s most delectable teas from there! The Pastais are excellent there as well and make a perfect compliment to my favorite coffee concoction : a 3/4 flat white - 2 shots of espresso with just the right amount of Origin’s delectable microfroth. Stylish! Rock on Origins!

Springleap Loves... The Kitchen in Woodstock shoutOut on 21/4/09 by EranEyal in wordUp | on 18/8/11 by SilverSabre | 1

Out here in Woodstock, the Springleap.com team are often searching for something to much during the day that has a bit of a wholesome goodness to it - you know - not junk food. The choice till recently is somewhat limited… but then BINGO! last week saw the launch of The Kitchen just downstairs from us. Freaking fantastic! Chloe and I walked out of the building towards Sociale (our normal haunt) to the right of us next to the Ogilvy building at 16h45 to find closed doors. Sadly we trudged on to the only hope- the ick tearoom between our building and Sociale, when we decided - heck - lets go check out the Palms Center. Our journey was cut short when we passed the most AWESOME lil shop on our right run by Karen, Victoria, Lelani and Sofia - who I recognized from the Saturday Organics Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Albert Rd. Now if you go to the Biscuit mill on a Saturday, let me save you some time telling you that there are only a few really outstanding spots : 1. Karen and the lovely lasses who make the most incredible salads and sandwiches. Rock on. That’s the best! So what attracted us - well the spot was just AWESOME and homely. It’s got that amazingly warm vibe that attracts you immediately and makes you feel AMAZING! Your heart just leaps in your chest and you just cannot help but to follow. The atmosphere is thick with the warm smell of great coffee and spices. A refrigerator laden with platters of carefully prepared salads, cheeses, chicken and meats are displayed to titillate the tastebuds. Adjacent to this runs the counter which is spread splendidly with lovely cakes and tarts ranging from Brownie Squared (ohhhh my word - they are deadly - take it from someone who knows Patisserie and Chocolates), lemon curd squares, almond croissants, Guinness Chocolate Cupcakes (No real Guinness beer in those - just chockie cupcakes with custard on top so they look like pints of Guinness :P ) and more! Behind the counter the gals are abuzz preparing fresh sandwiches, salads and coffee. They have the most amazing energy and have mastered the art of making each person feel like they are the only person in the joint that actually matters. And good news for the gals because the joint is jumping and jiving 6 days a week - Monday to Saturday. They understand the concept of service and have an incredible product that they have tried and tested over a great period of time. Karen says that it was quite a leap of faith going from catering and the Saturday Biscuit Mill to the so, but it is already immensely rewarding. Heck! I think just Springleap.com alone should keep ‘em in business :P They call their sandwiches “Love Sandwiches” - and it’s not far from the truth - you can tate the diffeence that is that little bit of extra care they put in each sarmie. In the menu they also boast a variety of fresh salads every day like wide rice, mint and yogurt and many other variations. You can choose what you would like in your sandwich ranging from Danish Feta, Pecorino, Salami, Bacon, Fresh Avo, Grilled Chicken and more. Karen Dudley and her spectacular entourage are high in demand on the catering scene. You can contact them at

South African Textile Industy - can it be saved? shoutOut on 27/4/09 by EranEyal in wordUp | on 18/8/11 by TheBrigand | 2
show |
||||||||||
WoW - in another major blow to the already ailing textile industy in South Africa one of the major mills owned by the Seardel Group closes it’s Divisions. The reknown Frame Group has been in trouble of a very long time now - it’s the accepted outlook that ever since Pilip Frame passed away (the founder of Frame), many years ago - the company has been on the dive. SACTU (South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union) were really upset, as you can imagine, when they hear the announcement. A lot of people are going to be losing their jobs - but faced with the way that the industry has been pile diving for the last decade, coupled with the recession - I am not in the least surprised. Long has the swan song of the textile industry been heard. Seardel claims that the final decision has in actual fact not been passed, but the fact is that this represents a resounding blow to the industry with 1400 jobs on the line. This is not the first major blow to the industry, what with the close of PUMA knitwear last year (not the sports brand, but a well known supplier of knits). The fact is that no matter what the union’s case is, Seardel have to heed the bottom line - if the division is unprofitable, they have to make the right decision that will in turn save countless more jobs. The closure of the this division could be the saving grace of many others or the company itself. Face it people - we are in a RECESSION ECONOMY - here in South Africa we are at least 6 months behind the International trends, and this is a mere taste of things to come. Buckle down bronco - we are in for a rough ride. The markets have been bullish for a very long time and a major correction has been due - the longer the market was bullish, the bigger the correction. It’s a bitter pill, but swallow it now and keep your eye on the ball. This is a time for companies to focus on building stronger better systems and logistics - to focus on strengthening their core foundations so when the recession lifts - and I do believe it will within 2 or so years - they have a very strong foundation to grow rapidly from. The real concern right now is the snowball effect that might ensue - the closure of Frame could mean that many small CMT’s (Cut Make and Trim) or clothing design firms that buy smaller lots of material could be left scrambling to try find fabric which may ensue in more manufacture moving overseas. Quite a blow indeed - 33 years ago by father and mother moved to South Africa from Chaifa, Israel to Durban - My father had met Philip Frame and Philip made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. My father eventually became the Director of Mechanical Engineering for the whole Frame Group, and when Philip died - he could see the beginning of the end right back then. It’s been a weird experience for me - I never thought I would be in the industry and remember the factories as a child, where I used to hang out on Saturdays and holidays with my father. Well - it seems that we are set for interesting times - and hopefully it does not become a Chinese curse. Meanwhile - Springleap continue to support the South African textile industry. Proudly SA all the way.

Wow- I was doing a bit of research on copyright infringement and t-shirt designs to understand the concept of what exactly isconstituted as design ripoff. Check this out! I had heard about this a while ago but never knew the extent of how bizarre or bad the situation actually was. So here is a bit of a low down on what happened. Ultimately we make no comments, rather present the facts and let you guys say what you think!
