The Loeries 2011 Awards was an explosive event!

They had the best creatives in the country all gathered under one roof, parties, entertainment…all sorts of engaging creative stuff.

However it all paled in comparison to one very HUGE surprise…one that sang, danced and made everyone roll with laughter.
Nothing could prepare the 1500 strong croud for the guest appearance by none other than The Hoff.

That’s right boys and girls, legendary grape smuggling-leather jacket clad-babe magnet, David Hasselhoff, was on hand to set the Sunday night Loerie evening on frigging FIRE!
The crowd erupted with cheers when David emerged!

Seriously the Loeries just rocketed to a whole new level in my books. I can just picture the Loerie event team thinking of which possible guest celebrities to invite. Dudes you picked a solid gold winner.
The only problem the Loerie team has now is topping it next year…who can you invite that has more across-the-board cred than The Hoff.

When he came out he was greeted by chants of “Hoff, Hoff, Hoff…”
There aren’t many people who have the kind of following that this man has generated over the years. LoL, he probably thought that Germany was his second homeland…maybe now South Africa will take that spot in his heart.

What is even more awesome was the fact that he was cheesy as ever. Tons of classic Hoff jokes were thrown about, causing slight loss of bladder control for many I’m sure.

David has been crusing around Cape Town enjoying the sight and sounds of the Mother City. He supposedly had a great time with his girlfriend at Table Mountain.

Whether you know him from his Knight Rider days, or as the main man in Baywatch, it’s hard to deny that when you hear his name you don’t share a connection with some of his work.
When I hear the name David Hasselhoff….I think of this music video…enjoy ;)

Hi there guys and girls,

Last weekend the most celebrated annual award show for design and marketing excellence in Africa decended on Cape Town.
The 33rd Annual Loerie Awards was, as always, a highly anticipated event, with bragging rights of the best agencies in the country up for grabs.

While most of the agencies that were nominated were those we have come to expect, there was still lots of fresh new faces making their mark.

 The Loeries was preceded by a week long festival of design in teh form of Cape Town Creative Week, which began on the 16th September, check out my posting.

For the first time ever the Loeries was held at the CTICC. It will be interesting to hear the opinions of the agencies involved over the next few weeks and to find out whether or not the venue lived up to the hype. Well, we heartily hope the Loeries will be back in Cape Town soon...after all, this beautiful city is the centre of design in South Africa and holds much of the countires creative power.

There are a multitude of awards to be handed out during the Loeries, 123 on the Saturday night alone. So you will forgive me if I dont mention them all....it would be a very looong blog indeed!

I think it best to rather send a big shout-out to the Grand Prix winners.
Congratulations to Ogilvy Cape Town for their Volkswagen ‘Marching Band’ Live Activations entry and Net#Work BBDO’s ‘New Friends’ Commercial Campaign for Mercedes-Benz.

In my opinion the silent marching band ad for Volkswagen was the best of the lot, so brilliant simple and fun.

Graffiti art has long been a mouth-piece for generations of urban culture.
Heck, even the ancient Romans used to paint their political sensitive views and opinions on city walls to get their message across.

I was interested to see that mega popular comedian Jim Carrey is an avid fan of graffiti and even gets his ‘graf’ on to create his own works. Recently he created some graffiti artwork on the door of his art studio...which was then swiftly painted over by New York city officials.

NO offfence to Jim but I found this absolutely hilarious. He has the balls to actually do the artwork in the first place, risking public ridicule if people dont like his work and then gets his precious graffiti painted over by ‘the man’.

BAM, what a slap in the face!
Granted the municipality probably didn’t realise it was his work...they probably thought they were doing the citizen, whose property had been trespassed against, a favour.

Anyways, I was happy to hear that Jim Carrey actually took the reverse-vandalism quite well and has since done a fresh graffiti artwork in the very same spot.
Up yours New York officials.....do you know who I am? If I wanna paint on my own spot I will freaking well do so!

Nah, he didn’t actually say that about the dudes from the council, in fact his response went like this, “This gentleman has a job to do”. “I'm just doing my job now as an artist and putting it back up. They can take it down again if they want to and it's OK with me ... I'll even pay for it."

Hmmm, well now that they know it was you, you may very well have to pay for it Jim, hehehe. You should be more like Banksy and generate some mystique, hehe!

Shame I’m giving him a bit of grief, but I actually like the graffiti he has done of his “mischevious deity” character he likes to call Baba.
LoL I sometimes call my girlfriend by the same name...although she doesn’t dwell in a realm of negative space.

Jim, I would like to learn more about your Baba character. If its something your mind came up with we can be assured that it’s going to be brilliantly hilarious.

I mentioned at the beginning of this post that graffiti is essentially about getting a message across. While Carrey may not be trying to voice any specific socio-political message, it’s groovy to see him creating ‘art for arts sake’...or, is this a mild ‘me so natural’ publicity stunt of some kind?

Do you think hes trying to tell us something here? Then again it could just be blog fodder for the man.

Whew, I really am impressed with the designs that came through for our Open Theme August 2 competition. I’m having a very hard time choosing my top designs for the comp, but there are a few front-runners that have made a good impact so far.

BarmalisiRTB is back with yet another awesome submission. After recently winning our July 2 Open Theme we thought he might take a break, but it was the complete opposite, he was back with more amazing designs, arguably even better than his Owl design.
This time around he has put together a wicked femme fatale design which is exploding with high detail and sexiness. Well, I suppose it’s a fitting design name then, Sexy is a serious contender.

Posing Boxer is the next design that jumped up on my radar. This stunning vintage boxing themed design comes from the hand of Kharmazero, who has earned himself a massive following on Springleap. His imaginative designs are fresh and never cease to blow us away here at the Springleap HQ. This design has got so much going for it. It has a clean style that mixes distressed watercolour effects with a perfect balance of negative color from the t-shirt. The theme of this has a strong Asian vibe, which reminds me of the just after World War 2 when the Americans had beaten their Pacific enemies.

One designer that should need no introduction is Sebasebi. Wow, all I can say about this guy is that he kicks some serious design butt. His latest addition to his Springleap collection is a fantastical Chinese character design called Sailing on a Lotus Flower.
It really is a beautiful design. The man floating on the lotus has such a mystical vibe, like he could be some sort of travelling monk with amazing martial prowess and a mild temperament...somebody like Li Mu Bai from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
 

There we have it, 3 designs each with equal potential for walking away with the victory. Right now it is anybodys guess as to who exactly our design winner will be for this one, but let me say that these 3 are by no means the only designers that are in with a chance. These are just a few of the designs which have made me sit up and take notice!

HAHAHA, I just saw the funniest video posting on The National Braai Day Facebook page!

Not so long ago I gave you all a headsup about the impending awesomness that is South African National Braai Day (Aka: Heritage day).

Braai = barbeque...just a reminder.

I embedded the very awesome official National Braai day music video, which really got me ambed for a serious day of fun with my buddies.

Well, Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues have put together their own hilarious Braai Day parody of the infamously terrible pop song ‘Friday’ by Rebecca Black.
Yep and it is infinitely better than the original :P

I really loved how they put together the video. Very well produced with perfectly written lyrics that most people (regardless of country) should understand and have a good laugh at.

The “marinade, marinade” bit at 1:02 was too classic for words.

Most South Africa men are only interested in meat when it comes to a braai. Dont come with your veggie alternatives, or salads, unless you want trouble. This video plays on that classic South African Braai theme quite nicely. In reality it’s usually quite different...well with my group of friends at least. We seem to be overly prepared in every department. We have to organise salad, potato bake, braai broodjies (garlic and cheese bread thingies)....the works.
When I lived in Durban it was meat or nothing!

This video is such a stereotypical collection of South African friends getting together for a braai.
Well done to Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues for putting together one seriously funny National Braai Day video....maybe it will become the next official video, hehe.....or not :P

Remeber that National Braai day will be taking place on the 24^th of September.
