Riaan Cruywagen - Loerie 2011 guest appearance shoutOut on 22/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Yesterday I gave David Hasselfoff a big highfive for his appearance at the Loeries awards 2011 over the weekend.
Seriously, it is impossible to deny the awesomness that is our own local news reading vampire. It seems like everyone knows him as this unflinching robot person with no emotion…which is pretty funny considering he looks similar to Data from Star Trek LOLZ. Just recently he added his power to the marketing campaign in what has been hailed as one of the best Loerie awards ‘build ups’...EVER!
The Loerie ad shows Riaan talking in his normal deadpan manner in what appears to be the studio but as it zooms out it shows him sitting in a Jacuzzi with loads of hot babes. It concludes with with Riaan sitting with a pineapple cocktail where he simply states, “I’m in a jacuzzi.”
Classic! Very much in the vein of the Old Spice ads….you know, the “I’m on a horse” one :P Riaan you rock SA to the core dude! |

David Hasselhoff - Loerie 2011 guest appearance shoutOut on 21/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

The Loeries 2011 Awards was an explosive event!
That’s right boys and girls, legendary grape smuggling-leather jacket clad-babe magnet, David Hasselhoff, was on hand to set the Sunday night Loerie evening on frigging FIRE!
Seriously the Loeries just rocketed to a whole new level in my books. I can just picture the Loerie event team thinking of which possible guest celebrities to invite. Dudes you picked a solid gold winner.
What is even more awesome was the fact that he was cheesy as ever. Tons of classic Hoff jokes were thrown about, causing slight loss of bladder control for many I’m sure.
David has been crusing around Cape Town enjoying the sight and sounds of the Mother City. He supposedly had a great time with his girlfriend at Table Mountain. |

WINNING DESIGN - Sailing on a lotus flower - Sebasebi shoutOut on 20/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

The Master has returned!
It seems like only yesterday that Sebasebi blew us away with his stunning Spirits of the forest design in our Roll Over compo. CONGRATULATIONS for your zen-tastic Sailing on a lotus flower design….it has instilled me with a wonderful sense of inner peace. *bow*
Sebasebi is a true master of two very important design qualities: a high level of detail and a powerful command of negative space. We love the way he has made the t-shirt color works for the illustration itself. It really does compliment the overall aesthetic. This would work on many different color tees. I think melange would look absolutely epic as well.
It is always fantastic to see a design that is so immersive, has beauty that comforts you and puts you at ease. The concept and execution of Sailing on a lotus flower does exactly this, impressive work as always Sebasebi. Thanks to all the designers who submitted their top-notch work. It was also great to see so many new faces on Springleap. Welcomewelcome!!! There was some serious competition this time around however, with BarmalisiRTB, TheRaymex and Qimstudio all chasing closely at Sebasebi’s heels. To check out more of Sebasebi’s design work, please jump across to his Springleap design page…prepare for much droolage. Well done once again to Sebastian, what a pleasure it is to have your breath-taking designs on our site. D |

Hi there guys and girls,
The Loeries was preceded by a week long festival of design in teh form of Cape Town Creative Week, which began on the 16th September, check out my posting. There are a multitude of awards to be handed out during the Loeries, 123 on the Saturday night alone. So you will forgive me if I dont mention them all....it would be a very looong blog indeed!
I think it best to rather send a big shout-out to the Grand Prix winners. In my opinion the silent marching band ad for Volkswagen was the best of the lot, so brilliant simple and fun.
Click here for the full break-down of who won what. Well done to all the lucky winners! |

FEATURED DESIGNER - Cash shoutOut on 16/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Prepare to Cash in on some serious inspiration.
Vinicius Carvas, or Cash, as he is known around these parts, is a designer who has generated serious respect here at the Springleap.com HQ and with the community as a whole. Thus far Cash has pulled off two very convincing victories with us. Not to mention many occasions where he narrowly missed out on a win. Usually when he enters he will be in the top 3 from the very beginning...now that is impressive.
His first win with us was the aptly named Happyland. This is such a fun natural design, which just pumps out oodles of positive vibes. I still have mine sitting in my cupboard. I try not to wear it too often because I want it to last forever ;)
The next design that pipped the other mega-designers to the proverbial post was Spring Bottle. What I loved about this design most is how relaxed and happy it makes me feel. If you would like to check our more of his amazing stuff, do yourself a favour and scope out his wicked-cool Cashland website and of course his Springleap design page. There are so many amazing Springleap.com designers which I would love to showcase. Maybe one day I will pull off this mammoth task. Until then I will keep bringing you the very best of the Springleap artists, one by one, golden brick after golden brick!
Cash, you rock sir!!! |

Jim Carrey Graffiti shoutOut on 15/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Graffiti art has long been a mouth-piece for generations of urban culture. I was interested to see that mega popular comedian Jim Carrey is an avid fan of graffiti and even gets his ‘graf’ on to create his own works. Recently he created some graffiti artwork on the door of his art studio...which was then swiftly painted over by New York city officials. NO offfence to Jim but I found this absolutely hilarious. He has the balls to actually do the artwork in the first place, risking public ridicule if people dont like his work and then gets his precious graffiti painted over by ‘the man’.
BAM, what a slap in the face!
Anyways, I was happy to hear that Jim Carrey actually took the reverse-vandalism quite well and has since done a fresh graffiti artwork in the very same spot. Hmmm, well now that they know it was you, you may very well have to pay for it Jim, hehehe. You should be more like Banksy and generate some mystique, hehe!
Shame I’m giving him a bit of grief, but I actually like the graffiti he has done of his “mischevious deity” character he likes to call Baba.
I mentioned at the beginning of this post that graffiti is essentially about getting a message across. While Carrey may not be trying to voice any specific socio-political message, it’s groovy to see him creating ‘art for arts sake’...or, is this a mild ‘me so natural’ publicity stunt of some kind? Keep it up Carrey! |

Kings of Leon - SUPPORTING BANDS shoutOut on 13/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

GET READY TO ROCK!
Kings of Leon are comin in October!!!! The news that is now on everybodys lips is the announcement of the 3 local supporting bands which will warm-us-up before Kings of Leon lets loose with their Southern style alternative bluesy rock awesomeness. It has been confirmed that the 3 super-cool local bands will be Shadowclub, Die Heuwels Fantasties, and the Black Hotels. These are all seriously groovy bands guys and girls. While it is an honour to play with such a huge international band like Kings of Leon, I still feel that they are happy to have such top-notch SA bands to support them. This gives our bands a good opportunity to show the world what we can do....because the “eyes” of the world will be upon us.
Serious thanks must go out to Nokia, 5FM and SABC3 for organizing this event. Do you have a Notion of how good this is going to be? ;) I have added a few videos below so that you can get a better idea of what kind of music Shadowclub, Die Heuwels Fantasties, and the Black Hotels produce. You are going to love this! SHADOW CLUB

Open Theme August 2 - AWESOME DESIGNS shoutOut on 12/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

Greetings guys and girls.Whew, I really am impressed with the designs that came through for our Open Theme August 2 competition. I’m having a very hard time choosing my top designs for the comp, but there are a few front-runners that have made a good impact so far.
BarmalisiRTB is back with yet another awesome submission. After recently winning our July 2 Open Theme we thought he might take a break, but it was the complete opposite, he was back with more amazing designs, arguably even better than his Owl design.
Posing Boxer is the next design that jumped up on my radar. This stunning vintage boxing themed design comes from the hand of Kharmazero, who has earned himself a massive following on Springleap. His imaginative designs are fresh and never cease to blow us away here at the Springleap HQ. This design has got so much going for it. It has a clean style that mixes distressed watercolour effects with a perfect balance of negative color from the t-shirt. The theme of this has a strong Asian vibe, which reminds me of the just after World War 2 when the Americans had beaten their Pacific enemies.
One designer that should need no introduction is Sebasebi. Wow, all I can say about this guy is that he kicks some serious design butt. His latest addition to his Springleap collection is a fantastical Chinese character design called Sailing on a Lotus Flower. There we have it, 3 designs each with equal potential for walking away with the victory. Right now it is anybodys guess as to who exactly our design winner will be for this one, but let me say that these 3 are by no means the only designers that are in with a chance. These are just a few of the designs which have made me sit up and take notice!
How about you guys, who do you think is gonna win? D |

Get ready for creative overload in the Mother City. We are so excited that the Creative Week Cape Town 2011 is just about to kick off. For those of you have as yet not heard of this massive 10-day long event, let me give you a quick low-down.
Creative Week Cape Town is a about supporting local creatives by generating the means to showcase their ample talent to a wider audience and in doing so sustain and strengthen the development of both the “creative and knowledge economy” in the city of Cape Town.
Creative Week Cape Town is known as a “legacy event” for building faith in South Africa as an avenue to clinching the bid for the Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 event. This awesome event will be held from 9 to 18 September 2021 and will be held throughout the city of Cape Town. You just need to take a look at their home page to find out more details. Simply click along the schedule timeline and it will list all official event for the day. You can also search by event type if you are hunting for something specific! The price depends entirely on the event you are interested in, however it seems that loads of the events are entirely FREE! The event will serve as a great ‘warmer-upper’ for the upcoming Loerie Awards which start a few days before the end of Creative Week Cape Town.
There are so many event on, but the first thing that grabbed by attention was the Full Day Life Drawing class with Roxy Spears looks to be really beneficial for those who would like to pimp their drawing skills. It seems to be for any skill-level, so dont feel afraid to get involved.Frank Joubert art centre on the 10 September (Saturday). Cost is R280 for the whole day or R150 for either the morning or afternoon sessions. Take a look and let me know what your favourite event is, can you suggest some cool ones for our design community? This is going to be so much fun!

National Braai Day 'Friday' parody shoutOut on 7/9/11 by DuncanBoxie in peeps |

HAHAHA, I just saw the funniest video posting on The National Braai Day Facebook page!
Braai = barbeque...just a reminder.
Well, Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues have put together their own hilarious Braai Day parody of the infamously terrible pop song ‘Friday’ by Rebecca Black.
I really loved how they put together the video. Very well produced with perfectly written lyrics that most people (regardless of country) should understand and have a good laugh at.
The “marinade, marinade” bit at 1:02 was too classic for words.
This video is such a stereotypical collection of South African friends getting together for a braai.
Remeber that National Braai day will be taking place on the 24th of September. Dont forget to make a plan and cram in as much food and fun as possible! |
