Splish Splash Goldfish is back!

One of the most iconic aspects of summer time in Cape Town is undoubtedly the music .
We have tons of rock gigs, outdoor psy-trance festivals and a pumping club scene .

However if you ask all the locals to pick one group or band that personifies the summer, chances are they will say Goldfish.
This off the wall electro band has been pushing the envelope of local and even international dance for some years now and has become an institution for summer fun.

Every year Goldfish picks a spot to take up residence over the season.
This year the Goldfish summer gigs will be held at St Yves on Camps Bay which sounds like a totally ideal spot.

Sundowners, beautiful people, sandy feet …and of course, TOP NOTCH MUSIC .

Submerged Sunday’s are back boys and girls!
Goldfish summer gigs will be held every Sunday from 4pm ….walk in off the beach if you want ;)
Entrance fee is R100 .

These parties are renowned for their sheer awesomeness!
Do yourself a favor and attend at least one of these gigs during the summer. If you have any friends from outta town, be sure to take them and give them a cultural experience they will never forget.

I enjoy coupling the ferocity, size and power of an animal like a tiger with the relative frailty of a child. I like to think we all have hidden powers. the point of this illustration therefore is to get us thinking – just what does this little girl have about her that makes her equal to a massive tiger.
She may be dreaming.
She may even have just died and the tiger is a kind of taxi ride to…heaven.

Piracy is a problem…and I’m not just talking about in Somalia either.

T-shirt design pirates are as old as, well as old as t-shirts :P
These scaly curs know no bounds when it comes to taking amazing original design and ripping it crudely in some backwater print shop….and on totally gross fabric as well.

When I think of ripped t-shirt designs I think of places like China and Thailand . I know that it is unfair to say that these criminals only come from these countries. In fact just about every country in the world has somebody doing something sketchy in the printing arena….shame on them.

Strangely enough South Africa is a place where I feel there is ‘less’ ripped t-shirt designs being manufactured locally . However I was on Between 10 and 5 and noticed that a design was spotted in Markhams of all places, which had ripped a Threadless design.

Now I’d like to know which scum-sucker at Markhams let this one through .
Ok ok before I get more peoples brooks in a knot, let’s think about this. Once you win on Threadless the design becomes their property . Bear in mind that this design supposedly won back in 2006 .
So, does Threadless have the rights to sell your design to another company once it is done with it?
I really hope that this is the case and that Markhams have sourced this design properly and has not brought SA down to the level of others who make oodles of cash off ripped t-shirt designs.
That would be seriously sad!

Imagine somebody ripped off one of our winners designs , I’d be super bummed…. I can just imagine how the designer would feel….especially seeing as though they would not be getting any of the credit .

Hi there one and all .

Have you all heard of Friends of Design , academy of digital arts ?

We met up with Philipp Schmid , who is the marketing manager of this cutting edge , Cape Town based, institution. It quickly became apparent that we were both on the same page , in regards to our though process and philosophy on design.

There is no doubt that these guys have one of the best digital arts colleges in the country .
It’s not just about the top-notch certified courses they offer, but the vibe and spirit which they imbue every facet of their college with.

So often these design colleges have a shiny exterior , but once you enter you quickly find out that its all about the money and your creative energies become tainted with ideals that are not conducive to personal growth .

Friends of Design are all about freedom! They want likeminded creatives to come together, collaborate , learn and most importantly become prepared for life in the great wide world of design…which as many of us know, is not the easiest path to tread.

We really got on with Philipp because we feel he and the college have a mindset that is very similar to that of Springleap . We both want designers to grow and become world class , we want to facilitate an environment where designers can be themselves and attain useful knowledge from individuals that have been there , done that , designed the t-shirt!

So, whether you are just leaving high school and looking to take your first leap into the world of design, or would like to expand your range as a designer , Friends of Design is the place to be.

Friends of Design run short and full-time courses in disciplines such as digital design, web design, DTP, interactive media, motion graphics , heck…there is even a specialist course for fashion designers who want to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to take their designs to new heights .

These cool guys are also holding an epic competition where 3 very lucky contestants will be selected to take part in a grueling design challenge , while at the same time receiving 3 months of FREE technical training . This is a design compo that could give you a serious head start in life. How about winning an internship with a internationally recognized agency? Sound good?
